Job Description

At Unreasonable Group, we believe entrepreneurs building rapidly scalable businesses are our best bet for solving the most significant social and environmental challenges we face. Our mission as a company is to relentlessly drive resources into and break down barriers for these entrepreneurs solving these BFPs (Big F*&kin’ Problems). For the media team, that means mobilizing storytelling in its various forms and through our diverse channels to generate as much exposure and awareness as possible for our brand and our community.

The Director of Press and Communications (the “Director”) will lead a team across brand, communication, video, and social media functions, in strengthening an original and truly impactful brand across all of our various communications channels. The Director will produce, manage, and lead Unreasonable's external communications strategy in the market. Specifically, the Director will produce all Unreasonable press releases, work with each of our corporate partners to design and implement communications related to every program that is run at Unreasonable, and oversee our global strategy for all digital communications.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the small but mighty cross-functional media and communications team, driving the overarching vision and strategy of the team and staying on top of industry trends and data analytics.

  • Work consistently with partners (e.g. Barclays, Pearson, Accenture, etc.) to plan and implement communications strategies and metrics for success that are customized for all programs, including PR/press plans and at times creative storytelling campaigns in partnership with major media outlets (e.g. VICE, Financial Times, Bloomberg, etc).

  • Develop press relationships and related press materials to help drive more exposure and credibility to the Unreasonable brand and our partnerships.

    • (Note: Press and related communications activities will make up close to 50% of this role.)

  • Manage the development and implementation of the media team budget and constantly fine-tune the market value of our media offerings alongside the Partnerships team.

  • Support the Marketing and Communications Manager in setting growth strategies across all Unreasonable social media channels, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.

  • Support the Video Production Manager in reviewing and offering feedback on scripts and video drafts of films that tell the story of our partnerships.

  • Support the Creative Director in delivering brand-consistent, adventurous, strategically sound work that amplifies a cohesive message about Unreasonable’s brand.

  • Attend the majority of Unreasonable’s 10-day to two-week programs to oversee the media team, conduct interviews with entrepreneurs, and support the successful implementation of our world-class experiences as needed.

  • Retain consistent relationships with entrepreneurs in order to identify media opportunities that best drive exposure at pivotal times in their company’s journey.

  • Work under the guidance of the Senior Leadership Team – and in tandem with the media team – to constantly re-imagine strategies that best represent the voice of Unreasonable, building a movement the world has never seen before.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR....

  • You have experience building a company’s media and communications strategies from the ground up, especially during periods of fast growth and scale.

  • You are able to lead and ensure unity across a small, fast-paced, cross-functional team. At the same time, you can present the team’s work to our partners, entrepreneurs, and the wider team with clarity and confidence.

  • You have experience building working relationships with journalists focused on business, innovation, and technology at major outlets like The New York Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Financial Times, BBC, etc.

  • You have a familiarity with the media landscape and are eager to push expectations on what can be done with a small team.

  • You are supremely entrepreneurial and love to run experiments to test your ideas.

  • You are equal parts left-brain and right-brain. You are wildly creative, yet you love to analyze the details to make informed decisions.

  • You believe magic is in the details. Every pixel and letter counts.

  • You are a strong writer, and you believe in the power of telling stories that drive action.

  • You are equally able to collaborate with a multinational partner or teammate as you are able to take full ownership of a project from start to finish.

  • You show up with empathy, humility and generosity. Your intent with all your work is to create positive impact – for entrepreneurs, your team members, and beyond.

  • You believe deeply in the importance of transparent and honest communication in what you write and how you manage your team.

  • You are what we would refer to as a GyShiDo Master.

  • You always follow up and follow through on your word.

  • You are not the type of person who says, “That’s not my job."

  • You are willing to learn things you don’t know and do whatever it takes to get the job done.

  • As you read about Unreasonable’s core values, you get more and more excited with each value you come across.

Bonus points if you…

  • Have helped build a company’s overarching strategic communications strategy from the ground up and been responsible for securing major press hits in (and major creative media partnerships with) top-tier international publications.

  • Are well-versed in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. You know this space and who the influencers are.

  • Have lived and worked in a variety of countries, and you know how to reach many different audiences.
