Job Description

Introduction to the role

The Farshore Design team at HarperCollins have an exciting opportunity for a creative and talented Designer with ambition and strong vision to join our Design team, working on the picture book and Illustrated non-fiction list. This position is a fixed term contract for up to 12 months.

Working closely with The Publisher, Editorial and Design team, the candidate will be a champion of the picture book and non-fiction list, identifying both new and proven talent. They will have responsibility for developing appropriately targeted and commercial books for children.

Key tasks and accountabilities

  • Developing new picture books and non-fiction titles in line with the publishing strategy

  • Assisting the Deputy Art Director

  • Identifying new and proven illustration talent for the list – building strong relationships with agents and universities

  • Identifying opportunities and ideas to develop the backlist and trend-led IP products

  • Negotiating freelance and illustration costs to keep within budget

  • Attending and presenting at cover meetings

  • Knowledge sharing within the team (e.g. software/design/concepts/formats/trends)

  • Managing Design admin tasks for your titles (e.g. invoicing/file management)

  • Making corrections for reprints where required

 

During your first six months you will...

  • Bring new talent to the list

  • Develop strong relationships with the picture book and non-fiction team

  • Lead an IP growth or trend-led project

  • Support the importance of diversity and inclusion

  • Offer key assistance to the Deputy Art Director

Experience and skills

  • Creative flair and proven experience in designing market leading covers and interiors – specifically for picture books – suitable for children aged 3-7 yrs.

  • Experience of negotiating with and commissioning illustrators, either directly or via agents

  • Ability to deliver clear, commercial briefs and art direction for all areas of the market

  • Vision and ambition to make the titles you design a commercial success

  • Relevant consumer, trend and market awareness

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, for both internal and external meetings

  • Good team player who is focussed on strong author and illustrator care

  • Excellent organisational skills
