Job Description

Every person counts - build technology to deliver impact

Overview

Simprints builds innovative technology aimed to help some of the world's most vulnerable and marginalised populations access essential services. We work to radically increase transparency and effectiveness in global development, making sure that every vaccine, every dollar, every public good reaches the people who need them most. We design and develop both hardware and software by applying modern tools and pioneering technology in new, challenging contexts where there is little to no internet connectivity. Simprints is currently on track to help over 1.4 million people access critical services by 2021.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Data Engineer to join our Analytics Squad and grow out our data infrastructure and lead our budding data science team. You will shape the direction of our data communication products and processes by leveraging operational and management information system data collected from our app and purpose-built hardware deployed across South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. These will be used to improve the quality of life for beneficiaries around the world and enable data-driven decision-making and R&D at Simprints. Our operational data is derived from an Android application, backed by a back-end hosted on the Google Cloud Platform.

This work will interface with many parts of Simprints, including our Project Delivery, Research, and Partnerships teams who heavily rely on data for evidence-based decision-making. You will be part of a passionate team working together to solve some of the world's most intractable problems and committed to support your professional development, but you will need to be the team expert on handling data from day one, and keen to grow out the function across the team.

Solving real-world problems and shaping how data is used by Simprints and our partners, you will need to have a passion for the real-life implications of data, commitment to collaborative problem solving, robust design, and quality product. You need to be sharp, a quick learner, and able to thrive in a startup environment. You will have a wide-breadth of knowledge, and always be looking to learn and improve.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain our internal analytics tools: interactive dashboards, automated reports and visualisations of live project data, and necessary data pipelines

  • Write scripts to help us with R&D studies that aim to evaluate the performance of our technology

  • Build the Data Science team at our company by keeping the team up-to-date on modern best practices, being actively involved in future hiring, and mentoring more junior data scientists

Must-Haves

  • Track record of team leadership providing technical guidance and mentorship

  • Core Data Science skills:  data wrangling, analysis, and visualisation (in Python or R)

  • Experience with any software used in dashboards (e.g. Dash, Shiny, Google Data Studio, Tableau, etc.)

  • Experience with maintaining ETL pipelines, where scalability and speed are important considerations

  • Good knowledge of clean code, version control, tests, and other best practices in software development

Bonus points that would help you in this role

  • Familiarity with out-of-the-box visualisation tools like Tableau, Power BI, Looker, etc.

  • Knowledge of statistics and/or modelling, particularly in the context of research-driven investigative studies

  • Experience developing products in an agile environment, and being involved with feature design

  • Familiarity working with a variety of databases (e.g. MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Google BigQuery) and large datasets with >1M rows

  • Exposure to cloud services like Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, etc.

Why Simprints?

  • Deliver a positive impact on millions of the most vulnerable people in the world

  • Work in a diverse team with 20+ nationalities among an overall group of 42

  • Collaborate with dedicated and talented engineers committed to writing high quality, clean code using the latest technologies: R, Google Cloud Platform, Go, Kotlin.

  • Incredible perks

    • Unlimited paid time off. Last year, the average Simprints employee took a total of 31 days off (annual leave plus UK bank holidays)

    • See our tech in action by joining our deployments around the world: Bangladesh, Ethiopia, or Zimbabwe just to name a few

    • Truly flexible working hours. More efficient late at night? That’s fine by us, start after lunch. We are looking for people who get the job done, not for people who get the job done between 9am and 5pm

    • An unlimited budget to spend on learning. In the past, Simprints engineers have spent this on attending tech conferences, international development conferences, enrolling in Udacity nanodegrees.

    • Two ‘LEGO Days’ each quarter where you can work on any project you want. Past projects have ranged from exploring image processing techniques to building a LEGO train to deliver beer around the office

What to do next?

Traditional recruitment processes are open to a lot of subconscious bias: your name, where you studied, previous employers, and a host of other factors can lead to your candidacy being treated differently to others. We’ve built a recruitment system that seeks to minimise that bias as much as possible.

Once you fill out your details on our recruitment portal (start by submitting your email address through the link on the top right of the page), you will see a link to a Technical Assessment. This will take you between 60-90 minutes. Submit a link to your answers and the team will blindly mark the assessment. That means they won't know anything about you other than the quality of your work. It's one way that we make sure that we get the best candidates, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, academic background or any other factors that can bias hiring teams.
