Job Description

We are looking for a Chief Executive Office (m/f/d) to lead the Global Sepsis Alliance (GSA) full-time based in Berlin, Germany. 50% physical presence in the GSA head office in Berlin is expected as well as regular international travel. Beyond that, virtual working is supported as far as feasible.

About us

About 20 percent of all global deaths are related to sepsis. About 50 million people come down with sepsis per year. The bulk of these mortalities and its long-term sequelae could be prevented. The Global Sepsis Alliance is a registered charity in England with the mission to provide global leadership to reduce the burden of sepsis. The GSA is also the initiator of World Sepsis Day and World Sepsis Congress, and a driving force for the adoption of the WHO Sepsis Resolution by the World Health Assembly in 2017.

The GSA works closely with its over 100 member organizations, five regional sepsis alliances, patient advocacy groups, professional societies, healthcare authorities, and governments to foster the implementation of the requests laid out by WHO sepsis resolution and to make sepsis a priority on the national and international level.

We are on a growth trajectory, seeking to step up our global reach and influence, with increased support to our regional sepsis alliances and national partner organizations. We have developed a strategic plan to support the GSA’s growth over the next three years. A central part of this plan is the creation of this Chief Executive role to take the organization to the next level.

Role of the Chief Executive

  • External representation of the GSA to achieve established objectives, with the support by members of the GSA Executive Committee and Board

  • Stakeholder management in coordination with the GSA President, Vice- Presidents, and Board and continuous consideration of interests of different stakeholder groups including WHO head quarter, WHO regional offices and other organization of the United Nations family, donors, foundations medical professionals, patients and their relatives the general public, medical associations and politicians

  • Intensive fundraising activities and donor relationship management, including the development of relationships with new prospective donors, and maintenance of successful established relationships, with the objective to significantly increase the GSA’s revenues on a sustainable basis

  • Leadership on the implementation of the GSA’s 3-year strategic plan, in close alignment with the GSA Board and in consultation with the head office staff

  • Efficient and effective management of the head office staff

  • Financial management based on the available budget

  • Accountability for the GSA board

Requirements

  • Previous work experience in a competitive environment such as Consulting, Private Equity, Venture Capital or a leadership position in the Not-for-Profit sector

  • Degree in any field, or equivalent experience

  • Expertise in working and communicating with C-level executives, corporate boards and senior management

  • Knowledge and expertise in the health sector are advantageous, but not required

  • Rigorous problem solver with a strategic mind-set and a strong focus on successful implementation

  • Inclusive people leadership style and proven track record with regards to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

  • Strong fundraising experience

  • Track record in key account management and/or customer relationship management/donor relationship management and/or fundraising

  • Strong stakeholder management skills addressing different stakeholders such as patients and their relatives, donors, foundations medical professionals, the general public, medical associations and politicians

  • Experience in leading virtual organizations and teams

  • Fluency in English, German and other languages would be a plus

  • Knowledge and experience with disciplined financial management

  • Physical presence in Berlin (about 50%) and willingness to engage in regular international travel
