Purpose of the Role   

To create, plan, lead and deliver PR strategies that are integrated with the policy, fundraising and information, and other charity areas; and to lead on all proactive and reactive media activity to raise awareness and understanding of the charity’s work among service users, partners and influencers.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

1.     Plan, develop and deliver the charity’s proactive and reactive PR and media strategy to increase awareness of Turn2us so we can help more people struggling to get by, and build collaborative partnerships.

  • To support the development and delivery of integrated campaigns, in partnership with the other external affair team members, that help challenge the perception of poverty and help more people struggling to cope find the support they need and to support our income generation.

  • To build and manage stakeholder relationships including other charities, advocates, VIP supporters such as celebrities, political influencers, and case studies who can help raise profile of the Charity and the real impact of poverty.

Duties:

Plan, develop and deliver the charity’s proactive and reactive PR and media strategy to increase awareness of Turn2us so we can help more people struggling to get by, and build collaborative partnerships.

  • Develop and deliver the PR and media strategy to promote the charity among people who need their help

  • Support on the charity’s policy work with the alignment of messaging and producing relevant press releases and statements; as well as working as part of wider campaign teams.

  • Field inquiries from stakeholders and respond in a timely manner

  • Identity, maintain and build relationships with a range of media stakeholders

  • Act as a spokesperson when needed; and ensure all other spokespeople are well briefed and prepped ahead of media interviews.

  • Stay up to date on best practice and innovation within the sector

  • Draft and distribute proactive press releases and statements, press notices, reactive media comments, features and letters to editors, often to tight deadlines.

  • Harness the news agenda and market broader knowledge and expertise to contribute to existing stories and maximise exposure of Turn2us and its services.

  • To support the Fundraising and Programme teams with targeted media support for campaigns, activity and partnerships.  

  • To amplify the voice of people with lived expertise and help support with the development of a suite of powerful case studies or personal stories for use across the and in print via digital media. Ensure the briefing and preparation of people stories in readiness for media interviews.

  • Manage the out-of-hours press phone as and when required.

  • Analyse, report and present on analytics data and social listening to inform our ongoing PR activity and programme of work.

To help lead the development and delivery of integrated campaigns, in partnership with the other external affair team members, that help challenge the perception of poverty and help more people struggling to cope find the support they need and to support our income generation.

  • As part of the wider team, help develop compelling campaigns that resonate with target audiences across paid, owned and earned media, using data and insights.

  • Develop an advocacy programme to break down the barriers or systems triggering people to fall into poverty.

  • Understand policy areas such as financial inclusion, personal finance and regulated financial services to support our policy work and ensure our integrated campaigns seek to tackle the problems faced by people directly affected by poverty.

  • Take responsibility to keep the profile of poverty high on the public agenda by planning related PR activities and events to make sure this happens.

  • Identify tactical opportunities for campaigning on emerging issues, delivering campaigns and project work which mobilise action from new and existing supporter base.

  • To amplify campaigns with focused fundraising and service delivery messages where appropriate, working closely with colleagues across the Charity to plan and deliver activity.

  • To support other charity teams with messaging and PR activity where necessary.

  • Support the charities campaigning work by building and maintain relationship with influencers including politicians and policy makers

  • Work with the Campaigns & Communications Manager to integrate our PR activity with our social media.

  • Promote engagement with different audiences including those supported by the charity, supporters, media, the sector and the general public

  • Take an innovative approach to digital media and seek out new avenues and opportunities for creating greater awareness and engagement

  • Support the fundraising team to promote Turn2us and increase income generation.

  • Support internal communications via Turn2us intranet, meetings and written briefings – in particular in line with campaigning work.

  • Responsible for delivering the Turn2us celebrity strategy to ensure that the charity’s activities are supported by high-profile individuals where appropriate.

  • Provide advice and briefings to senior staff, internal colleagues, case studies and third party spokespeople such as case studies to help them effectively deliver messages when they represent the Charity in the media or at events

  • Develop ideas and run projects to engage and collaborate with charities and organisations.

  • Work collaboratively with other teams to promote the Charity’s objectives and gain support for campaigns.

  • Lead on work tackling benefits stigma and improving public attitudes on our social security system through our external affairs work

  • Create opportunities for advocacy and outreach on behalf of the lived experts for whom we exist

  • Write, edit and prepare key stakeholder reports and materials

  • Lead of relationships with external partners, including the ACO and the End Child Poverty coalition and identify new opportunities

  • Field inquiries from politicians, regulators and other charities

  • Identify partnerships and ambassadors to promote the work of Turn2us

  • Represent the charity where necessary at various media and public affairs engagements

  • Lead Turn2us’ involvement with stakeholder campaign groups

  • Research for and help produce Select Committee enquiry submissions

  • Support the role of the secretariat for the Universal Credit APPG in partnership with the Policy & Public Affairs Manager.

These are the normal duties, which the Charity requires from the position. However, it is necessary for all staff to be flexible and all employees will be required from time to time to perform other duties as may be required by the Charity for the efficient running of the charity.  This Job Description is non-contractual. It will be reviewed from time to time and may be subject to change. The post holder will be expected to ensure that their work complies with contractual terms and conditions, the Charity’s policies and procedures and key legislation, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and charity law.

Person Specification

Professional Qualification

Desirable:

  • Membership of appropriate professional body

  • Relevant vocational qualification – for example media, PR, communications, journalism

Skills  

Necessary:

  • Exceptional writer with experience of producing copy for a variety of audiences 

  • Experience in editing and managing the production of copy from others, either in press office, news room or communications team context

  • Comfortable with being able to publish on a range of platforms and CRM and CMS systems

  • Project management with specific experience in managing awareness campaigns

  • Strong attention to detail

Knowledge  

Necessary:

  • Awareness of the issues relating to poverty in the UK

  • Awareness and strong working knowledge of the sector with specific experience with similar charities desirable

  • Strong understanding and contacts with journalists, editors and producers across all mediums including print, online and broadcast

  • Understanding of Data Protection legislation/GDPR and implications for managing stakeholder data

    Desirable:

  • Understanding of the political landscape in UK including Westminster, the devolved parliaments and local authorities 

Experience 

Necessary:

  • Experience of planning and developing PR and media campaigns

  • Experience of managing large scale, national, public communication campaigns

  • Working knowledge and experience of setting up systems to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication activities

  • Ability to manage project related budgets.

  • Experience of managing third party suppliers.
