Job Description

At The Atmospheric Fund (TAF), the Senior Manager, Impact Investing will lead the origination, structuring and approval of new investments, including due diligence and overseeing market research and analysis, with direction and support from the VP, Impact Investing.

This is a full-time, permanent position. TAF is a hybrid workplace, and staff work an average of two days a week in our downtown Toronto office (and the balance of the week remote-working), although alternative arrangements can be discussed.

About you and the role

The Senior Manager, Impact Investing will be a strategic team player at TAF, as an active and experienced impact investing professional, responsible for driving financial opportunities for the organization. As directed by TAF’s investment strike zone, strategic focus areas, direct investment targets and Statement of Investment Objectives and Principles, you will be responsible for:

  • Opportunity Origination

    • Identify leads, use outreach and build networks to originate investment opportunities and support the development of transactions and sources of transactions for TAF.

    • Support and advance the development of innovative structures, repayment methods and other investment and financing strategies to advance low-carbon, high impact activity in the GTHA.

  • Strategy and Direction Setting

    • Support VP, Impact Investing to enable the Impact Investing team to deliver on annual plan goals and actions; innovation and continuous learning/improvement.

    • Monitor and identify targets and gaps in our portfolio mix and develop strategies to address.

    • Collaborate with TAF teams to leverage impact investing in strategic focus areas. Work with TAF's policy and program teams to identify areas of alignment between the organization's mission and investment opportunities.

    • Prepare and deliver regular status reports to staff, Investment Committees and Board regarding investment performance and impact, business development, and other key issues as required.

  • Due Diligence, Deal Structuring and Market Intelligence

    • Lead presentation of opportunities and recommendations to VP, Impact investing and to TAF’s Investment Committees and Board.

    • Oversee and ensure due diligence of all investment opportunities including analysis of project viability, financial statements, repayment capabilities, and collateral (will be supported by new role, to be hired in 2023).

    • Oversee and leverage financial, industry, economic, and other analysis and insights to facilitate decision-making, with Impact Investing Analyst.

    • Lead and participate in the negotiation of transaction terms and structuring of deals, consistent with TAF’s guidelines and risk/return requirements.

    • Guide and assist external legal team in structuring and closing of transactions.

  • Collaboration and Communication

    • Provide input and direction to Communications team to implement outreach and marketing activity such as content, publications, event attendance and other tactics to achieve TAF impact investing goals

    • Be a TAF spokesperson and ambassador, through presenting and networking at events and conferences to build our profile and investment pipeline

    • Represent TAF publicly in a manner consistent with TAF’s professional standards, providing thought-leadership in fora and networks related to impact investing

    • Collaborate with other staff members to seek out areas of synergy; at staff meetings, retreats, and other working groups

Qualifications and Skills we are looking for

  • MBA, or equivalent/related education.

  • At least 5 years of progressive experience as a lender/credit underwriter or investment account manager in a commercial or merchant bank, venture capital, private equity or equipment leasing firm, corporate finance or similar organization.

  • Sophisticated financial literacy including understanding of corporate financial statements, privately held companies, early-stage ventures, commercial real estate, private equity, investment funds and financial sector dynamics. 

  • Familiarity, network and demonstrated interest in market opportunity and activity of climate action.

  • Ability to research and assimilate significant amounts of information.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in undertaking qualitative and quantitative financial analysis including vertical, horizontal, weighted and future expectations, sensitivity analysis and crafting scenarios, and interpreting legal documentation.

  • Good knowledge of financial markets and trends.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with confidence in speaking to and engaging with internal and external audiences and ability to communicate and present ideas well.

  • Advanced working knowledge with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and highly skilled in using spreadsheets, pivot tables and presentation software.

  • Comfortable using video conferencing tools including Zoom and MS Teams for meetings, events, as well as day-to-day team collaboration.

  • Engineering background and business valuation skills an asset.
