Job Description

Does the sound of a blended IoT hardware and SaaS product interest you?

At XY Sense, we’ve engineered a new kind of AI-powered sensor to create safer, smarter workplaces. Having recently closed a $A5M seed funding round (backed by Blackbird Ventures), we are currently looking for some contract level support in our Hardware Engineering team to assist our rapid growth and the continual improvement of our sensor systems and our offering to customers.

The Role

This entry-level position will be a pivotal part in the development of the embedded Linux systems which run on our product-IOT-sensors. You will be applying your skills towards, researching, designing, developing, and testing sensor systems and components to ensure that our product continues to deliver positive differentiation in the market.

Working underneath expert guidance, this is a great opportunity to develop your understanding of Embedded Software and Hardware Engineering, and gain hands-on experience in a rapidly scaling (global) startup blending AI powered analytics and IOT hardware.

The work you’ll do

This opportunity will have responsibility for managing some key projects, including;

Complete implementation of existing burn-in test. This involves;

  • Connecting sensors together on a network with a testing computer (Linux) resulting in coordinated tests across the sensors and in our cloud.

  • Basic networking: applying an understanding of subnets, static and dynamic IP addresses etc. to control the sensors and run network bandwidth tests.

  • Python programming in a Linux environment.

Completion of Functional Circuit Test (FCT) jig to ensure individual functions of sensor motherboards operate as expected post assembly. Involves;

  • Control of USB and Ethernet testing equipment

  • Interfacing with basic input/output equipment such as Analog/Digital Converters (ADCs) and General Purpose Input/Outputs (GPIOs)

  • Translating written test procedures into working tests, making sure those procedures are correct and cross referencing against required results.

Running updates to connector board test jig

  • Reconfiguration of existing test platform with the goal of making it more intuitive for repetitive use in a factory

What you’ll need to bring

As an intern or recent graduate, we will be looking for people who;

  • Have mid-level electronics understanding and knowledge of embedded systems. You probably study it and may have done some side projects in this space.

  • Posses a good/basic working knowledge of Python programming in a Linux environment.

  • Some experience in and the ability to point to project examples using C++, PlatformIO, Teensy

  • Are driven to diagnose and problem solve faults with electronics hardware

  • Are good communicators and have attention to detail and structure.

  • Are genuinely self motivated and have a persistent attitude to be able to work autonomously with light supervision.

  • Keenness to take ownership of the work they do and the code they produce

  • Strong desire to learn and be an active participant to our team at XY Sense.

How we’ll structure this role

We can work with you to find the right structure that works for both of us. The workload is large enough to make this a 5-day per week role, but if you have other commitments which means you can only dedicate 3 or 4 days per week, we get that. We are also open to hiring two interns to cover requirements.

This is work that we need to do and value as a company. As a result, this is a paid internship/entry level contract with a rate to be discussed with the right candidate taking into account their experience and mutual role objectives.

Note that this role will require you to work predominately onsite in our Cremorne, Melbourne office, as you will need to be getting hands on with testing jigs and hardware.

A bit more about us

We’re on a mission to use smart sensors and AI powered analytics to create workplaces people love.

Founded in 2016 by Alex Birch and Luke Murray, XY Sense is a Melbourne headquartered technology startup who has created the world’s most advanced workplace sensor. It’s private by design (protecting people’s privacy), has the longest range of any sensor on the market, collects data passively and best of all delivers highly accurate workplace utilisation analytics in real-time.

Why should you care?

We built this ‘first-of-its-kind’ solution because companies around the world are spending billions of dollars every year on empty, un-loved and under-utilised office space. The struggle to find a free meeting room, a desk, or a place to make a phone call, is real and offices are nowhere near as effective as they should be. Our sensor is changing that. Helping companies use data to better plan space, save money, deliver better workplace experiences and in the era of COVID, keep those offices safer.

Plus we’re doing all of that by leveraging really cool tech to build something that’s truly new.

Our founders have previously founded/successfully exited other proptech companies so we know what we’re doing. Our investors think so too. We’re backed by Blackbird Ventures, Australia’s most prominent venture capital fund (Canva, CultureAmp, SafetyCulture).
