Job Description

As an account manager you will cultivate and manage relationships with current and potential clients to advance the organizations Wilderness Medicine account portfolio. An account manager's primary responsibility is facilitating the course creation, booking, and logistical process for sponsor partners. Our sponsor partners operate our wilderness medicine courses in partnership with NOLS Wilderness Medicine. You will help these sponsors by customizing programs within our existing systems for the contracting, logistics, enrollment, and communication, supporting the needs of the department and our high-volume business partners including government clients and faculty sponsors.

Account Managers are independently responsible for managing relationships with external audiences and for collaboration with NOLS Wilderness Medicine staffing and admission teams. These relationships result in 300 courses, or roughly 30% of the department’s business annually. You will work closely with the Business Operations Manager, and the NOLS Wilderness Medicine Director and function as an integral member of the NOLS Wilderness Medicine Program Team.

What does an Account Manager do?

This role is in our NOLS Wilderness Medicine team and will be involved in the following activities:

  • Managing relationships with NOLS Wilderness Medicine’s high volume sponsors.

  • Initiating course development process by building relationships and assessing opportunities for expansion viability and the subsequent impact on other regional sponsors.

  • Managing concerns and conflicts with all high-volume sponsors and negotiates acceptable practices.

  • Coordinating the booking, contracting, and collection of course information for assigned partner courses. Regularly communicating with sponsors to ensure accurate information is presented to service providers, students, and instructors.

  • Ensuring database integrity for these courses throughout the year and manages the addition of new courses outside of the annual plan.

  • Providing programmatic and logistical support for NOLS Wilderness Medicine sponsored courses held in locations throughout the world.  This includes pre-course tasks such as securing course location, instructor housing facilities as well as communicating directly with instructors.

  • Creating and maintaining custom systems to integrate key tasks of NOLS Wilderness Medicine operations to outside organizations workflow.

  • Providing customer support, reminders, and follow up related to these courses.

  • Participating in the statement of work and operational guidelines with high volume sponsors; meeting contractual and operational expectations.

  • Tracking long term financial impacts of course related expenses. Typical contract obligations range from $10,000 to $75,000.

What makes a great Account Manager at NOLS?

  •  Ability to develop a firm understanding of the NOLS Wilderness Medicine mission, organizational systems and policies. As well as sponsor’s mission, systems and internal policies (examples: budget cycles and operational procedures).

  • Ability to assess sponsors’ desired outcomes and to suggest solutions inside NOLS business practices and guidelines.

  • Ability to work independently, organize multiple duties and prioritize workload.

  • Strong interpersonal communication (phone, verbal, digital), planning and logistical skills. 

  • 2-3 years administrative experience and/or project and operations management experience or skills.

  • Above average fluency with technology.

  • Initiative, organization, flexibility, and tolerance for adversity and uncertainty.
