About The PSC

We exist to improve public services, for organisations, society and individuals. The PSC, formerly 2020 Delivery, is a team of public service consultants united by the belief that better public services are the key to a stronger society. Dedicated to the sector, we work closely and collaboratively with ambitious leaders and teams to solve complex challenges and deliver high-value change. Our expertise has been recognised by the Financial Times, The Economist, The Guardian, and the Health Service Journal.

Our team has deep expertise across performance, digital and strategy. For the past decade and a half we've been recognised for working with leaders in public services to tackle the knotty problems and make changes that last. We thrive on a challenge, we get our hands dirty and we're committed to delivering meaningful change that matters, to individuals, and society.

What we look for

We value the broad experience of our freelance associates, who work with our core consulting team to deliver lasting change in public services whilst retaining flexibility.

As an associate, you would be an integral part of our team and build strong ties with our staff and clients. You may work on projects for just a few days or for extended periods. You may take on a broad-ranging project role or responsibility for specialist aspects. Associates join us at different levels depending on their experience, and work alongside our consultants and directors.

We’re particularly looking for people with expertise in one of our services (Performance, Digital or Strategy) or with deep sector knowledge in a particular area of public service, such as health, universities or central government. We have specific needs for 2+ years’ experience in:

  • NHS/healthcare

  • HM Treasury business case delivery

  • Building excel models using established best practice methodology

  • Data science and advanced analytical ability – e.g., expertise in R and Python, using large/complex data sets to solve specific strategic and operational problems, strong statistical understanding and application of techniques

  • PMO

  • Health planning

  • Capital programme

  • Stakeholder/ clinical engagement

  • Healthcare consulting (5+ years’ experience)

We’re also interested in working with people with two or more years’ experience of using, and even teaching, one or more of the following:

  • Strategic problem-solving methodologies

  • Continuous improvement methodologies

  • Project and programme management

  • Change management and influencing skills

  • Using analytical tools such as Microsoft Excel.

The application process

There are three stages to the online application, so read the details below carefully and prepare your responses before proceeding.

In the first stage of the application you are asked to provide us with your contact information and a copy of your CV.

The second stage is a timed test. This multiple choice 'Problem Solving Test' asks you 9 questions typical of the type of work we do for clients, testing numerical and analytical ability through a case study. It's the best way we've found to help you understand the work we do and to help us to gauge your ability to do the job well. There are a few things to note:

  • During the test you cannot use the 'back' and 'forward' navigation in the browser window. If you do, your responses will be lost.

  • Some questions are easier than others, most of them require you to look at data in tables and charts, so work through them carefully, but keep an eye on the timer. You can find some example questions on our website at https://thepsc.co.uk/careers/how-to-apply/

  • Answers are required to all questions. They are multiple choice, so if you don't know the answer, make your best guess.

  • Unfortunately if you lose internet connection during the test, you'll need to start again.

  • You may wish to have a pen & paper and a calculator handy.

  • You have 25 minutes to complete this test. When the timer runs out your entries will no longer be scored, so you should input your best guess in order to be allowed to continue to the next stage.

The third stage is 3 open ended questions for you to tell us why you would make a great addition to our team.

Finally, we appreciate the time that goes into your application, we will be in touch as soon as we can. If you haven’t heard from us within two weeks of submitting your application, do drop us an email to check in: recruitment@thepsc.co.uk.

In order to process your application we will need to collect some personal data about you - rest assured we will handle your data with care and only use it for the purposes of assessing your application and auditing our recruitment process.
