 Job description

OBESSU is looking for a passionate recent graduate to join its Secretariat as a full time Research and Policy Assistant. The Research and Policy Assistant will be conducting a qualitative research on the impact of Covid-19 on education, in coordination with the Secretariat, the Board and the Working Group on Education Funding and will be in constant touch with our membership. The research is carried out in the framework of the Stronger School Student Unions programme funded by the Open Society Foundations’ Education Support Programme.

Your role in OBESSU

In your role, you will be in charge of:

  • Covid-19 research

    • Designing the research methodology, in coordination with a supervisor in the Secretariat

    • Conducting a desk research monitoring and mapping other researches on the same topic

    • Liaising with partner organisations working on similar projects and researches to exchange information and coordinate actions

    • Designing surveys, interviews and focus groups directed to Member, Candidate and Affiliate Organisations of OBESSU with the scope of collecting data

    • Coordinating with the OBESSU working group on Education Funding

    • Analysing and compiling data into a report 

    • Liaising with the Communications team in OBESSU to design a dissemination strategy of results

  • Policy work

    • Collecting recommendations from the Covid-19 research and coordinating an advocacy plan with the Board and the Policy and Communications Manager of OBESSU 

    • Monitoring policy developments by EU institutions on specific matters in education, training and youth under the guidance and supervision of the Policy and Communications team 

    • Drafting policy briefings on education and training topics for the OBESSU Board and Membership

 You are an ideal candidate for this position if you...

  • Have a bachelor or masters degree or a proven track record of work with research;

  • Have experience with qualitative and quantitative research (university experience is sufficient but let us know what you learned);

  • Are familiar with EU decision making and are able to monitor EU policy and political developments relevant to the work of the organisation;

  • Are able to write policy briefings on different process; 

  • Are interested in working with and for young people and more precisely school students and are interested in the work of OBESSU and the member organisations;

  • Are a motivated and collaborative individual interested in school student organising and youth participation; 

  • Are an person willing to develop sector-specific skills and competences (with specific emphasis on research);

  • Are interested in living in and experiencing a highly international context;

  • Have great command of English; other European languages are a plus;

  • Feel comfortable with using the GSuite, Office pack and other apps (e.g. Asana, Basecamp);

  • Are able to work independently but also cooperate with other colleagues and are open for feedback and learning from colleagues.

 What we offer

  • A small and friendly work environment

  • A contract under a Convention d’Immersion Professionnelle for 6 months (subject to the approval of Bruxelles Formation)

  • A financial subsidy of a maximum amount of 900 EUR per month

  • Reimbursement of travel expenses within Brussels (49EUR/month)

  • Opportunities to work remotely (ad-hoc expenses can be covered for home office)

  • On 9-10-12 October interviews will take place

  • On 14th October a final decision is communicated to the selected candidate.
