Job Description

Purpose of the Role 

The Planning Engineer ensures we have robust, resource loaded programmes, built from first principles in place for each project and effectively communicate this to all audiences, including Heads of Delivery, Construction Managers, Site Personnel and clients. 

Key to the success of the role will be setting out the short-term objectives of the projects and measuring progress against these, whilst understanding their impact on the project completion. 

You will be expected to consider cost implications for the projects as well as manage change considerations throughout the project life cycle, constantly challenging standard views and bringing the right engineering solutions to the project. 

Main Responsibilities 

Development of Programmes 

  • Able to produce histograms  

  • Record progress accurately  

  • Effectively communicate project plans 

  • Contract awareness – JCT and NEC specifically 

Pre Contract Planning & Work Winning 

  • Able to produce contract programmes that comply with requirements of different contracts types such as NEC without supervision.  

  • Collaborative working across teams. 

  • Attend client meetings and offer planning advice and input 

  • Check total resource in programme aligns to estimated resource and align differences  

Project Delivery 

  • Establish project controls and benchmarking for successful project delivery 

  • Record accurate as Built, rescheduled and entitlement programmes for the project 

  • Production of lookahead programmes and clear phasing sketches. 

  • Develop and maintain logistics plans 

  • Record and produce progress reporting 

  • Assist the team in knowledge and understanding of planning 

  • Develop Mitigation programmes / target programmes  

Commercial 

  • Has Knowledge and understanding of different forms of contract and their component parts in relation to programme management.  

  • Change management controls in place and Can feed in effect of basic change on projects to commercial teams.  

  • Ensures cost plan and programme resources are aligned.   

Digital Engineering / BIM 

  • Can interrogate 3D models and extract data (e.g. quantities, element details) from designers 3D models. 

  • Can view and capture images from 3D models for use within other documents and to clearly communicate ideas. 

  • Is aware of 4D modelling tools and can create low complexity 4D models linked to programmes with basic context and plant included.

As a Planner within Careys you develop and implement proactive engineering solutions to our projects, recording progress and setting the course for the short, medium and long term project delivery. You will be expected to create very clear programmes built from first principles, using quantities and outputs.  Additionally, you will provide detailed resource plans for the project against which success will be measured using exceptional project controls. Collaborate working with our commercial function will be a vital part of that. 
 
Working alongside our Heads of Delivery, Project Managers, Construction Managers, Engineers and Supervisors, you will proactively engage with the entire team, gaining vital experience of all roles involved in the construction process. When interacting with our clients, you will be an ambassador for Careys ensuring transparency around the project deliverables. 

 
The Planning function is key to the success of a project - planning and sequencing the permanent works.

Person Specification 

  • A good all-rounder with software 

  • Civil engineering qualification (BHons, HNC etc) 

  • Minimum 3-5 years experience as a site engineer/ senior engineer 

  • Positive attitude 

  • Ability to problem solve effectively 

  • Exceptional experience of collaborative working 

  • Able to work on initiative, self managing workload 

  • Keen to develop and progress in the business
