Job Description

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Head of Finance & Governance to join the dynamic Finance, People & Governance Directorate at London Sport.

This is a varied and exciting role leading our Finance & Governance team. Working closely with the Director of Finance, People & Governance you will play a key part in the effectiveness and efficiency of London Sport’s financial management and organisational governance. Central to this will be building relationships and skill with the London Sport teams working directly to help more people to become physically active.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide support and guidance to London Sport colleagues in the key areas of finance, including financial management, controls and budgeting, and governance, including policy development, grant giving and raising funds.

  • Lead on all London Sport’s external reporting to funders.  This includes the preparation and review of financial and related reports in line with contractual requirements, budgets, activities and impact.  

  • Support the Director of Finance, People & Governance and others to develop, implement and review policies, procedures and processes, keeping up to date with industry standards, best practice and legislation.

  • Manage the day to day work, objectives and success of the team who own all systems, processes and contractual relationships within finance and governance including in relation to Grant Giving, Project Management, Finance (currently SAGE), Board Communications (we use Board Effect) to name a few.

  • Work with peers within London Sport to ensure the effective running and implementation of our agreed ways of working.  Provide support and challenge (through a finance and governance lens) to the operationalisation of London Sport’s strategy.

  • As part of a team, contribute to all internal reporting including quarterly Board reporting and monthly management accounts culminating in the annual statutory audit.

Who you are:

  • Lived experience of day to day life in London.

  • A qualified or part qualified (by certificate and/or experience) accountant. You’ll have practical experience of financial management principles, with understanding of UK reporting standards as they apply to charities.

  • An understanding of charity governance structures, having practical experience in at least one of grant giving, fundraising, policy development or Board governance.   

  • A team leader, you will have experience of managing and developing high performing teams.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to convey often complex, financial information using various methods to meet the needs of a range of audiences.  

  • A senior project manager with an understanding and preferably experience of working with agile project management methodologies and in creating and managing project documentation.

  • A can-do positive attitude and flexible, solution-focussed approach. You have the ability to drive plans forward to achieve results. 

  • Capable of owning multiple tasks and seeing them through to their conclusion, meeting deadlines and prioritising work.

  • Ability to demonstrate a practical commitment to the Values and

  • Behaviours of London Sport.
