Job Description

About us

Pro Bono Economics (PBE) uses economics to empower the social sector and to increase wellbeing across the UK. We combine project work with individual charities and social enterprises with policy research that can drive systemic change. Our vision is for a United Kingdom with high wellbeing for all.

Experts and economists at PBE work on a wide range of issues related to wellbeing including mental health, education, employment, poverty, volunteering and civil society. The charity was founded in 2009 by Andy Haldane, former Chief Economist of the Bank of England and is chaired by former Cabinet Secretary Lord Gus O’Donnell.

The services PBE provides to small-to-mid-sized charities help them measure, understand and better articulate their impact, influence and inform policy and make best use of their data. Volunteer economists from across government, regulators and the private sector work in partnership with PBE to provide these services to charities on a pro bono basis. Whether they benefited from short-term support or in-depth evaluation, 94% of the charities that PBE has worked with say they would recommend us.

In 2020, the Law Family Commission on Civil Society was created by Pro Bono Economics with the generous support of Andrew Law and the Law Family Charitable Foundation. The Commission on Civil Society is an ambitious programme of ground-breaking research into how we can unleash the potential of civil society, to harness and enhance the powerful community bonds that exist in our nation.

About the role

The Digital Marketing Officer will report directly to the Director of External Affairs and will be responsible for the digital marketing of the organisation to its target audiences through its social media, website and email communications, as well as for the look and feel of the organisation through its branding and design.

The Digital Marketing Officer will work closely with all parts of the organisation, as well as directly with charities to support the launch of our pro bono publications and events. This is a varied and busy role that puts a premium on having excellent creativity, a collaborative approach, attention to detail and communication skills.

Post type: Full-time, fixed-term (24 months). Flexible arrangements will be considered.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensuring PBE, its staff, its work, and the Law Family Commission on Civil Society have as much impact as possible through their digital presence, most significantly through management of PBE’s websites and social media channels.

  • Collaborating with internal research teams and external charities, economic associates, research consultants and PR professionals to make the most out of PBE’s work online, particularly its publications and research.

  • Ensuring that the quality of PBE’s work is matched by how it’s presented, including contributing to data visualisation, and leading on designing reports, choosing the imagery that PBE uses and developing PBE as a brand.

  • Continually seeking to improve and innovate to attract attention to PBE’s work online.

  • Reporting on PBE’s digital impact.

Main duties & tasks:

Digital Communications

  • Website – Manage the content and design of the PBE and Commission websites, keeping them up-to-date, user-friendly, as accessible as possible and clear from errors with a view to constant improvement and regular updates as the primary window that people unfamiliar with PBE will use as a first encounter with the organisation. Key contact with website agencies.

  • Social media – Responsibility for enhancing PBE’s profile and attention for the charity sector with key audiences through its various social media channels – Twitter and LinkedIn – as well as managing content and security on PBE’s YouTube account. This includes promotion of PBE’s events programme in partnership with the Fundraising & Development team, creation and utilisation of graphics, videos and other visual assets, as well as supporting other members of the PBE team to promote the work of PBE in line with organisational objectives, as well as to abide by PBE’s social media policy once in place.

  • Email communications – Drafting, sourcing, proofing and distributing all affiliated copy, as well as managing the marketing lists for the monthly newsletter as well as the provision of support to the generation of other regular email marketing as the organisation requires, including for research purposes, regular volunteer communication and regular donor communication.

 Branding and design

  • Publications – End-stage design and delivery of PBE’s published work, including policy and research reports, fundraising materials and events materials. This may require working with external agencies/printers from time to time and organising proof reading, with an eye to guarding PBE’s brand and supporting colleagues to produce high quality work.

  • Visualisations – Approaching PBE’s work creatively, with the goal of creating brand-appropriate graphics and visualisations which communicate PBE’s messages effectively. This may include data visualisation work, video editing and graphic design. This may also include some external commissioning.

  • Brand management – Playing a major role in the rebrand and relaunch of PBE scheduled for 2022, as well as ensuring that all of PBE’s published work is consistent with the organisation’s branding guidelines in order to communicate PBE as a professional, high quality organisation.

 Internal communications

  • Training – Providing advice and coaching to colleagues to enable them to grow their own professional social media profiles and other digital communications portfolios, and to train colleagues who need access in the use of PBE’s websites.

  • Coordination – Keeping the organisation’s external affairs grid up to date.

  • Reporting – Leading reporting back internally on the work of the External Affairs team each quarter and the lessons learned, helping champion the work the team does.

  • Governance – Drafting of all digital marketing input for Board reports, including reporting on social media stats, website hits and specific outcomes for individual publications.

 Other duties

  • Record keeping – Ensuring all content associated with digital marketing is appropriately logged and regularly audited on Salesforce and SharePoint.

  • Miscellaneous - Pro Bono Economics is a fast growing and dynamic organisation, so there may be tasks that fall outside of these core responsibilities that the Digital Marketing Officer would be expected to support.
