Job Description

TAF is seeking a Carbon & Co-benefits Quantification Researcher to undertake research and analysis to quantify carbon emissions and energy use across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The Researcher will also manage data to support all quantification efforts undertaken by TAF, and help populate a database to automate, document the processes, data, and assumptions behind this work.

This is a full-time, 8-month contract position reporting to the Carbon & Co-benefits Quantification Manager. TAF staff are currently working remotely, and we are planning for a hybrid work model in autumn 2022. In the hybrid model, staff will be expected to work an average of two days a week in our downtown Toronto office (and the balance of the week remote-working), although alternative arrangements can be discussed.

Responsibilities

Quantification and Analysis

Research and Advisory

  • Support strategic research projects related to quantification, including collaboration with partners and the publication of such research. 

  • Monitor, evaluate, and synthesize available online tools and resources relevant to TAF’s quantification work, including those related to data visualization, inventory data sources and modelling.

Communications

  • Working with TAF’s Communications team, support the integration of GHG and co-benefits outcomes into TAF’s public communications, and knowledge dissemination by providing effective data products and visualizations.

 Other

  • Actively participate in staff meetings, organization-wide planning sessions, and working groups.

Qualifications and Characteristics we are looking for:

 Required

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in science, engineering, or a related technical field. 

  • Experience working with spreadsheets and relational databases (e.g. Microsoft Excel, PostgreSQL, MySQL).

  • Ability to analyze and synthesize technical information into compelling summaries and disseminate key findings from large datasets.

  • Passionate about climate action and/or urban sustainability issues.

  • Ability to work independently and manage competing deadlines. 

  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.

 Preferred

  • Familiarity with a modern programming language (e.g. Python, R).

  • Experience with software development and data visualization tools (e.g. Github, Tableau, etc.).

  • Familiarity with greenhouse gas reduction technologies, policies and programs related to buildings, transportation, land use, and waste.
