Job Description

The Cognition Company is looking to appoint a Junior Associate with a specific focus on Design.

In this role, you will work with a range of the Cognition Company's clients, with the aim of using insights and methods from design to help them improve their online platforms, enhance their products and services, or set their future strategies.

You will supplement these design improvements with insights from behavioural science and data science (working alongside specialist colleagues to do so), with a particular focus on how to encourage behavioural change in the use of these platforms.

You will report to the Digital Design Associate, but will work flexibly with everyone at The Cognition Company.

You will also have the opportunity to work on internal projects, such as our 'Behaviour Change Playbook' methodology.

The successful candidate(s) will have a background in design, with a keen interest in exploring how design can help change people’s behaviour. You may have previously worked in user interface design, user experience design, product design graphic design or service design.

Some examples of tasks you might be asked to work on include:

  • Conduct research to explore  how and in what context people are currently using a product or service to identify opportunities for improvements.

  • Visually summarise findings and present insights from primary and secondary research to define a series of problem statements or briefs.

  • Sketch design ideas to visually communicate possible solutions within an app or platform based on the behavioural insights identified.

  • Wireframe new or improved, more behaviourally informed, features within an app or platform to present the information, outline the structure and show the user journey.

  • Design high-fidelity mockups or prototypes of chosen features to show how they will look within an app or platform when they are finished and go live to the public.

  • Work directly with a partner company looking to embed behavioural science insights within its app or online platform (without necessarily having an explicit ‘design’ focus).

  • Contribute to building out our internal projects and methodologies.

Skills and Experience

All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • An undergraduate or Masters-level qualification in a relevant design field (for example user experience design, interaction design, graphic design, product design or service design) or equivalent UX qualification

  • A desire to blend their design skills with insights from other disciplines (in particular behavioural science and data science)

  • Comfortable developing wireframes and sketches using either digital prototyping tools such as Figma, InVision, Adobe Xd or other visual design tools such as Illustrator CC, InDesign CC and Photoshop CC.

  • The ability to work both independently and as an excellent team player, and take the initiative on projects.

  • The flexibility required to work with different teams on each project

  • The communication skills to share design methods and ideas with team members from different disciplines.

  • Good project management skills and experience working directly with partners.

  • Ability to independently deliver high quality work within project deadlines, feeding into the wider work being undertaken as part of a team

The following skills and experience are desirable but not essential:

  • Experience or interest in user research

  • Experience working alongside product teams, working within brand guidelines and design systems

  • Interest in behavioural science / how behavioural change happens and how to influence people’s behaviour
