Job Description

About the PRI

The PRI is the world's leading proponent of responsible investment. It works to understand the investment implications of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors and to support its international network of investor signatories in integrating these factors into their investment and ownership decisions. The PRI acts in the long-term interests of its signatories, of the financial markets and economies in which they operate and ultimately of the environment and society as a whole.

The PRI is truly independent. It encourages investors to use responsible investment to enhance returns and better manage risks, but does not operate for its own profit; it engages with global policy makers but is not associated with any government; it is supported by, but not part of, the United Nations.

Job description

Climate Action 100+ (www.climateaction100.org) is a new five-year initiative led by investors to engage systemically important greenhouse gas emitters and other companies across the global economy that have significant opportunities to drive the clean energy transition and help achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. To date, more than 300 investors with more than USD $32 trillion in assets under management have signed on to the initiative.

This role will help coordinate the AIGCC-PRI Asian Engagement Working Group, one of five network groups charged with coordinating investor-led engagement with approximately 32 of the focus list companies. The role will have a particular focus on Japan and the investors/companies involved in this country, but may also extend to other activities in other countries where relevant (e.g. China, India, South Korea).

Core Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the coordination of engagement activities of investors across the target companies, ensuring that they are aligned to the goals and timeline of the Climate Action 100+. The target companies include a range of sectors including chemicals, construction, industrials, mining & metals, oil & gas and transportation.

  • Provide strategic advice, guidance and administrative support for the CA100+ and participating investors to aid their engagement activities in Japan. This may include some translation of CA100+ information into Japanese.

  • Build relationships with investor participants to maintain and expand expertise of engagement practices, best practices and needs. This will involve working closely together with the PRI’s Japan signatory relations team to manage relationships with Japanese investors.

  • Convene and facilitate regular group meetings/calls to track the progress of engagements, discuss issues and share information. This includes ensuring investor accountability through bi-annual reporting to the overarching initiative.

  • Assist with the facilitation of the CA100+ Asia Advisory Group that provides strategic insights on the region.

  • Provide input to and disseminate relevant company research, engagement guidance, and other analysis (e.g. annual benchmarking and assessment) developed in conjunction with the broader CA100+ initiative and/or other PRI teams.

  • Work closely with other PRI climate engagement staff to ensure that various initiatives (both inside and outside of the CA100+) are aligned and coordinated.

Technical Competencies & Requirements:

  • Proficiency in both English and Japanese is essential. Other language skills relevant to the regions in Asia that the CA100+ is active (e.g. China, India, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia) are also beneficial, but not mandatory.

  • Investor and/or company engagement experience: good knowledge of responsible investment and understanding of asset owner and investment manager perspectives (particularly the Japanese market) is preferred.

  • Experience of working on climate change and/or environment related issues is beneficial.

  • Excellent organisational and project management skills, with ability to multi-task, prioritise and manage multiple timelines.

  • Ability to effectively chair and guide investor working group calls, leading them to successful outcomes in sometimes challenging circumstances.

  • Excellent networking and relationship building skills. Ability to forge sustainable relationships with industry leaders and decision makers.

  • Practical experience in investment management or related industry is advantageous.

  • Degree educated (or equivalent) in a finance‐related field (finance, economics, business administration, responsible investment, law) is highly valued.

  • Confidence with a range of IT and Internet tools

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and confidence/personal gravitas to deal with senior financial services stakeholders.
