Job Description

Job Purpose

To manage and supervise the effective and efficient running of the Distribution Centre [DC].  Reporting to the Shift Managers and liaising with fellow team leaders to ensure that work is completed on time and in the most cost effective manner whilst ensuring all team members are working in a safe environment.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

Responsible for the management and operational decision making across the entire shift to ensure that all aspects of the operation within the area of responsibility are effectively and efficiently controlled to deliver maximum performance and output including:

Pick

  • Monitor pick performance to ensure accurate and efficient pick levels are achieved through voice/paper pick and where necessary implement corrective action plans. 

Pack

  • Ensure accurate and efficient achievement of all packing in accordance with customer requirements and daily pack schedules.

Sort

  • Ensure the efficient flow of work to maximise sorter utilisation and throughput to achieve KPI’s.

Goods In

  • Ensure all deliveries and goods received are efficiently and effectively processed, correctly receipted and booked into the system within the shift. 

Trucks

  • Ensure that the appropriate truck resources are ready and available for safe and efficient use across the shift.

Dispatch

  • Control and ensure the safe loading of picked pallets within the dispatch area

  • Immediately notify Shift Managers of any potential fails or shortages, agree and implement corrective action plans.

  • Ensure that all administrative duties are completed on a daily basis i.e. Absence reporting, shift handover

  • Ensure that all Team Members are fully trained to carry out their duties safely, efficiently and to a high standard of quality, actively promoting ISO standards.

  • Frequently ‘walk the floor’ to ensure housekeeping and health and safety standards are being maintained.

People Management

  • Know and understand company policies and procedures relating to attendance, conduct and competence and ensure these are applied consistently throughout the team.

  • With the assistance of HR and Occupational Health as required, take appropriate corrective action where the appropriate standards are not being achieved, ensuring a consistent approach to all team members.  

  • Proactively provide training, mentoring and support for all team members to ensure the highest possible standards of competence are achieved.

  • Understand both company and statutory Health and Safety requirements and ensure these are achieved.

  • Hold regular team briefings to keep team members abreast of any company news, recruitment opportunities etc.  Feedback any unresolved issues to Shift Managers.

  • Ensure daily handovers are carried out with incoming Team Leaders. 

Cost and Budgets

  • Know and understand the DC KPI’s.

  • Understand the impact of going over fore casted headcount, overtime etc and the effects it has on the business.

Quality/ISO

  • Know, understand and adhere to ISO standards for the Distribution Centre.

  • Actively promote ISO compliance to all Warehouse Operatives and ensure compliance in all relevant areas.

Experience required

  • Experience as a Distribution Centre Team Leader or Equivalent

  • Previous experience in Distribution, logistics or FMCG

  • Experience in Managing People

  • Previous experience of dealing with unions

  • Experience of working to demanding deadlines
