Job Description

The Researcher - Bioethics and Policy, will play an important part in delivering the Nuffield Council on Bioethics’s overall work programme. This is a hugely varied and interesting role, which will enable the successful candidate to gain experience of a wide range of research, writing, and project-based activities across different focus areas including the environment, fertility, and the mind and brain.

About the role

The Council's researchers carry out literature reviews, work on public dialogue activities, and produce background papers and blog posts. They work closely with the academics, clinicians and other experts who sit on the Council’s committees, and with varied groups of external stakeholders.

In their first few months in this role, the postholder will support the Council’s independent review of disagreements in the care of critically ill children, working with the project lead to explore ethical issues arising in this area and consulting with relevant stakeholders, including publics and experts. This is a particularly sensitive area of work and will require the postholder to liaise with stakeholders thoughtfully and compassionately.

In addition, the postholder will contribute to the overall work of the Nuffield Council, including managing information resources, monitoring relevant developments, participating in horizon scanning and contributing to team discussions.

This is a fixed term role for 18 months to cover for an internal secondment, with the successful candidate ideally being able to start by April 2023.

About you

The candidate will require a relevant degree or equivalent experience (for example in biological sciences, medicine, philosophy, law or social science) and knowledge of bioethical issues. Good communication skills and experience of research, drafting and event organisation is essential.
