Job Description

About us

Pro Bono Economics (PBE) uses economics to empower the social sector and to increase wellbeing across the UK. We combine project work for individual charities and social enterprises with policy research that can drive systemic change.

We are now embarking on an exciting new phase of our development, building our research and policy function to develop new ‘macro’ insights into the potential of civil society. We recently launched the Law Family Commission on Civil Society (www.civilsocietycommission.org) -  a high profile, cutting-edge research programme exploring the value of civil society and the challenges and opportunities it faces in the 2020s. Armed with new content, we want to play an enhanced role in helping shape the policy debate in the UK through a programme of public events, media engagement and contact with different layers of government.

About the role

We are looking for an Economist or a Researcher with a quantitative specialism, to join the PBE Research & Policy team.  The new team member will be deeply involved in the design and delivery of the Law Family Commission on Civil Society, contributing original research, building a rich cross-sector network of contacts and developing policy recommendations. They will also contribute to PBE’s public profile, providing analysis and commentary on economic and fiscal events, managing sector surveys and developing content for publication across a range of media.

Post type: Full- time or part-time, fixed-term (24 months). Flexible arrangements will be considered, and we welcome people applying on secondment

Reports to: Research and Policy Director

Main duties & tasks:

  • Design and deliver a range of high quality, original, quantitative research projects

  • Represent PBE at seminars, conferences and other public events

  • Manage a rich network of stakeholders in the voluntary sector, government, the private sector and academia

  • Monitor and keep the team informed of external data and policy developments relevant to PBE’s research programme

  • Any other duties as deemed reasonable by the line manager.

About you

The role would best suit candidates with training in economics or statistical analysis, and ideally some knowledge of the key government and administrative datasets relating to wellbeing, living standards and civil society in the UK. Candidates should have experience of designing and delivering research, communicating findings, organising projects and an interest in developing policy recommendations.

Ideal characteristics include:

  • Interest in influencing policy change and a demonstrable interest in the public policy issues relating to civil society

  • Demonstrable writing and presentational skills in a range of contexts and to a range of audiences

  • An eye for detail and a strong dedication to quality

  • Proven ability to work independently and manage priorities, deadlines and projects that may involve multiple contributors

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work flexibly as part of a small team in a fast-moving environment

  • A network among the UK’s analytical and policy communities

  • A commitment to PBE’s focus on using economics to drive wellbeing improvements in the UK.
