Contract term: Six-Month Internship

Hours: 40 hours per week 

The Role

The Better Business Act (BBA) campaign, run by B Lab UK is recruiting a six-month intern to support our growth as we move into the second phase of the campaign.

The BBA

The Better Business Act is a business-led campaign run by B Lab UK. B Lab UK is the organisation behind the B Corp movement seeking to redefine success in business by putting social and environmental impact on a par with profit.

The Better Business Act’s mission is to change the law to make sure every company in the UK aligns the interests of their shareholders with those of wider society and the environment. We want to amend s.172 of the Companies Act to incorporate these four principles:

  • Aligning interests of wider society and the environment alongside shareholders.

  • Empowering directors to make better decisions. 

  • Applying this change to all businesses by default. 

  • Businesses report on how they balance people, planet and profit.

We are now backed by a Coalition of over 1500 companies, ranging in size from small and medium size enterprises including Iceland, Anglian Water and innocent drinks. The coalition acts as the voice of business, advocating for this change amongst their networks and MPs.

Internship purpose

The Better Business Act campaign is at a crucial time of growth. We are looking for a creative and proactive intern, who can work with the team to learn how to manage and grow the campaign’s coalition of businesses, increase our visibility on social media channels and come up with creative content which showcases the coalition and drives the campaign's cause. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • This internship will provide insight into the day to day running of an ongoing campaign which is engaging with Parliament to change the UK law on how UK business are run and managed.

  • Gain understanding in how to grow and engage a campaign audience. 

  • Understand how to use creative content to engage and grow the supporters in the business community. 

Skills and Expertise

  • Interest in the BBA campaign and the context for the campaign (B Corp movement, purpose-driven business, stakeholder governance, Better Business Act).

  • Quick learner with excellent attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and communication skills

  • Strong administrative skills with an eye for organisation and prioritisation.

  • Confident in managing multiple social media platforms. Knowledge of the platform functionality on LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram would be beneficial but can be developed during the internship.

Desirable but can be developed in the role

  • Confident to plan and write engaging content for the website e.g. a blog; and creating engaging social media content.

  • Has the ability to write content for different audiences and experience in writing newsletters.

  • Experience with platforms including Mailchimp, Monday.com, Wordpress and Canva.

  • Interest/ experience in policy & public affairs would be advantageous. 

Intern tasks  

  • Social Media: administration of social platforms (LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram), engaging and growing our audiences, highlighting the campaign, cause and issues. 

  • Digital Communications:

    • Collating news and activities from online publications about the campaign and sharing them on social media, via our newsletter and on our website to raise awareness of key issues relevant for the BBA.

    • Finding events and news for the audiences to provide relevant and interesting engagement opportunities.

    • Using Mailchimp to create and send newsletter emails to keep the coalition and our wider audience up to date with campaign progress.

  • Website: day to day administration of the BBA website and bring creative ideas around improving the content on the website to engage a wider audience.  Ensure content is up to date.

  • Content creation:

    • Collect content from our coalition via interviews or contact with coalition members and and write up case studies from the coalition for social media and our website.

    • Contribute ideas for, and create longer form content for socials and the BBA website on key issues relevant to the Better Business Act.

  • Support for Campaign Manager

    • Administration of the Coalition database, including onboarding new supporters, researching the company, inputting information onto Monday.com.

    • Measuring and tracking engagement across the coalition, flagging who are our most engaged coalition members, potential spokespeople and where around the country we have the highest and most active supporters.

    • Measuring KPIs (social media, website traffic, new supporters) and logging this to measure growth across different audiences.
