Job Description

This is an exciting new role in a fast-growing organisation working with responsible businesses to change capitalism. The B Corp movement encourages businesses to manage their impact on society and the environment with as much rigour as they manage their profits.

The B Corp Movement

Certified B Corps seek to redefine success in business by putting social and environmental impact on a par with profit. B Corps manage the impact of their entire business through the B Impact Assessment and reach high standards of social and environmental performance. B Corps also amend their governing documents to consider the impact of their decisions on people and planet.  

The B Corp community is a global group of businesses who provide leadership through their commitments to people and planet, and create examples of success for others to follow. There are now over 4,000 B Corps in over 70 countries and covering 150 sectors. B Corps include Patagonia, The Body Shop, Kickstarter, The Guardian and Veja.

B Lab was created in 2006 with the mission to inspire and enable people to use business as a force for good. We are transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet. A leader in economic systems change, our international network creates standards, policies, tools, and programs for business, and we certify companies—known as B Corps—who are leading the way.

B Lab UK was launched in 2015. Our purpose is to redefine success in business through building a community of engaged businesses, raising awareness of the B Corp movement and championing change in the UK economy. The B Lab UK team is small but growing, friendly, innovative, and committed to changing how business operates.

The Head of Community role

The B Corp community in the UK is the fastest-growing in the world, and is becoming more influential as we make the case that every business should be a force for good. At the heart of B Lab UK’s strategy is our community of B Corps, who are engaged ambassadors for the movement and continuously strive to improve their impact. Our strategy is focused on establishing B Corps as leaders of the shift towards stakeholder driven capitalism.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in B Lab UK’s long-term success by enabling the B Corp community to thrive and lead the way in using business as a force for good. The candidate will be a relationship builder who is a lateral thinker, recognises the importance of process to achieve scale, identifies opportunities and delivers solutions. They will be responsible for managing a team, accountable for meeting the needs of a growing community, overseeing engagement activities and ensuring improvement is integrated into the certification cycle.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Overall responsibility for the community and delivering value for B Corps in the UK

Team

  • Manage the Community Team and support their development 

  • Set the objectives and deliverables for the team

Community Management

  • Responsible for overseeing community invoicing, working with the Community Support Officer to ensure processes are effective

  • Accountable for the delivery and analysis of annual community survey

  • Responsible for risk management of the community

Community Engagement

  • Responsible for planning and expanding our offering to meet a rapidly growing B Corp community

  • Working with the Engagement Manager to explore innovative ways to account manage a growing number of businesses that cover a spectrum of sizes and sectors

  • Working with the Impact Manager to encourage continuous improvement throughout the community and enable B Corps to continue learning and leading on good business practice 

  • Manage CEO engagement and run the Ambassadors programme

  • Primary contact for CEOs of large B Corps

  • Oversee and ultimately accountable for key engagement activities, events and tools throughout the year including B Corp Month, Best for the World and the B Hive

  • Responsible for managing existing B Locals and meeting demand for expansion

  • Responsible for an annual B Corp event - ranging from 1 day to multiple nights, working with the team to build a landmark event 

Skills and Experience

  • At least 5 years’ work experience, with at least 2 years operating at a senior level in a community / account management role

  • Accomplished relationship builder and communicator with a track record of engaging diverse stakeholders 

  • Strong leader and team builder with the ability to provide clear direction and to motivate a team to deliver outstanding results

  • Demonstrated experience working as part of a dynamic and collaborative team

  • A strategic and lateral thinker with an eye for the bigger picture and the end goal

  • Comfortable in a dynamic start-up environment but also understands the need for process. It will be varied and hugely rewarding

  • Collaborative, with a team mentality

  • Proactive, organised and self-motivated. You’ll enjoy rolling your sleeves up and getting things done.

Reports to: Director of Programmes and Engagement

Direct reports: Engagement Manager and Impact Manager

Salary & Benefits

  • £42,000 per annum

  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays and office closure over Christmas

  • Flexible hours 

  • Work from home 2-3 days a week (others in the office - Aldgate East)

  • Volunteer days

The process will consist of at least 2 interviews; one technical interview with a task to prepare and present, and at least one conversational interview.
