Job Title: Interim Head of Investment Management

Location: Hybrid: London (Chancery Lane area) and homeworking

Contract: 9-12 Month Fixed Term Contract or Secondment covering Family Leave

Reporting to – Chief Investment Officer

Salary – £83,000 – 90,000 per annum, depending on experience

About the role

We are looking for an exceptional candidate for the role of Interim Head of Investment Management to cover a period of family leave of the existing role holder to help us to deliver our mission to improve peoples’ lives in the UK through with the help of social impact investment.

Your work will be focused in two principles areas:

1)     Leading our investment management activities – This involves working across the organisation to take a portfolio view of our investment activity and ensure we effectively deliver our new and portfolio social investments across our Market Systems (social lending, social property, impact venture and social outcome contracts).

2)     Lead our Multi-Asset Treasury Portfolio – Our Social Investment Portfolio drives our overall investment activity, and our Treasury Portfolio is managed to ensure we have the required liquidity to meet our capital commitments. We have recently established a sub-portfolio focused on higher returning, medium time horizon treasury assets with strong ESG and impact credentials alongside an asset-liability matching portfolio to meet near term commitments. You will lead the bedding in of this new portfolio over 2023.

The role holder will also play an important role supporting the learning and development of the investment team.

What you will do:

The Interim Head of Investment Management will take responsibility for BSC’s investment management activity and Multi-Asset Treasury Portfolio, working with colleagues across the organisation. The job holder will:

Lead investment management activities including:

·       Working with the CIOs to ensure we’re building a dynamic and balance portfolio of social impact-led investments to deliver on our strategy, mission and organisational sustainability, including reporting to the Investment Committee quarterly on portfolio composition again plan

·       Ensure a consistent and effective end-to-end investment process is delivered across all investments that enables high quality decision making, value-add performance management and meets our clients’ needs and regulatory requirements

·       Ensure portfolio risks are effectively identified, captured and managed across our Market Systems to support high quality decision making, including reporting to ExCo Risk and our ARCC Board sub-committee.

·       Support the continuous improvement of how we deliver our investment activity, particularly on portfolio management, across the organisation working with the following teams: all Market Systems, Data and Portfolio Operations, Impact, Finance and Legal.

Lead the Multi-Asset Treasury Portfolio including:

·       Working with the CIO, oversee the overall performance of the Multi-Asset Treasury Portfolio and consider any required actions on a quarterly basis or more regularly as required.

·       Working with the CFO, help to manage the overall Treasury Portfolio based on the liquidity required for the Social Investment Portfolio.

·       Working with a dedicated Investment Manager and external advisor, review the performance of holdings in the treasury across financial and ESG/impact considerations, including engaging with the fund manager.

·       Working with a dedicated Investment Manager and external advisor, develop a pipeline of potential investments and undertake due diligence for consideration by the Investment Committee.

·       Oversee all reporting to the Investment Committee and Board committees on the progress of the Treasury Portfolio.

·       Support the continuous improvement of how we deliver our Multi-Asset Treasury Portfolio

Supporting the learning and development of the investment team including:

·       Working with the CIO and People Team, consider and lead initiatives to improve the confidence and capability of the team to deliver our investment activity

·       Being a part of the investment team leadership group to support the ongoing management of the team, particularly across different functions

·       Potentially acting as a line manager to members of the investment team

·       Coach and provide support as required to other team members, as required, on making and managing individual investments

 

What you will bring

Experience (essential)

·       A passion and demonstrable commitment to improving people’s lives

·       Extensive experience of making and managing multi-asset portfolio across public and private markets

·       Extensive experience of delivering investment management activities, including investment strategy, asset allocation, process, performance management and risk.

·       Experience integrating and considering ESG factors in investments

·       Proven relationship building and influencing skills

·       Extensive experience managing people and forming collaborative working relationships  

·       Experiencing of operating at, working alongside or presenting recommendations to either an executive or board within organisations

Experience (desirable)

·       Impact investment background

·       UK social sector employment or voluntary experience

·       Experience integrating and considering impact factors in investments

·       Experience of activities across the public, private and social sectors

·       Experience of embedding learning into the investment process and delivery

·       Proven project management skills

·       We are a UK-based business with an office in the Chancery Lane area of London, accessible to a number of public transport links. Our current approach allows colleagues to spend 40% - 60% of their working hours in the office, and the remainder from home.
