Job Description

William Collins and 4th Estate, two London based division's of HarperCollins, is opening their virtual doors to welcome in would-be industry professionals to our Harper:Lite Virtual Learning Days.

If you want to spend a day finding out more about editorial, marketing, publicity and job searching tips within publishing, add your details via the link provided and you could be chosen to join in – all without leaving your home!

Not only will we have speakers from across our different departments, but across our two imprints that publish a range of different books, from stunning literary fiction, narrative non-fiction, memoir, natural history, best-selling biographies and beautifully designed cookery books.

We would normally host a selection of learning placements at our different sites for those wanting to break into the industry, however due to Covid-19 we’re not currently able to welcome anyone into our offices. Instead, we would like to give you the opportunity to sit in on our William Collins or 4th Estate publishing meeting, meet the team and ask questions about working in the Publishing industry. This learning day will not only give useful insight into Publishing and give you the opportunity to network, but can also be added to your CV.

Participants will be chosen randomly, and the learning day is best suited to those who have not yet begun their professional publishing career.

Our open days will be held on the 3rd of February, 24th of February, 17th of March and April the 21st. We will let candidates know via email at least two weeks before each session begins if they are invited to join us on the day.

You will need to be available from 10am to 4pm on the days, and you will need to have access to Microsoft Teams, either on a laptop or via the app. Please select the days you are available on the next page to register your interest.

Read below to find out a little bit more about the two imprints.

4th Estate is one of the most innovative imprints in the publishing industry, with a reputation for producing critically-acclaimed and beautifully-designed books.

We made history by publishing Hilary Mantel‘s Booker Prize-winning novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, which made her the first woman and first British writer to win the award twice. We are the home of Pulitzer Prize winners Anthony Doerr, author of All the Light We Cannot See and Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of The Emperor of All Maladies. We publish the Costa Award winners Jon McGregor and Rebecca Stott, and the Samuel Johnson Prize-winning authors Lucy Hughes-Hallett and Philip Hoare.

We explore American life with Jonathan Franzen, Annie Proulx, Michael Chabon and Jeffrey Eugenides, and celebrate African and Asian literature with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Yiyun Li. We inspire cooks with books by Nigel Slater, Giorgio Locatelli and Anna Jones, and our nonfiction authors – Yomi Adegoke & Elizabeth Uviebinene, Ece Temelkuran, Matt Ridley, Elizabeth Day, Ben Goldacre and Hadley Freeman among them – influence the opinions and beliefs of readers around the world.

Our office bookshelves teem with classics from essential writers like J.G. Ballard, Joan Didion, Penelope Fitzgerald, Arundhati Roy and Joyce Carol Oates, and we have a well-earned reputation for publishing some of the finest writers from all over the world.

William Collins has published the very best in non-fiction writing, working on the principle that ideas matter to celebrate authors who ask the right questions, explore untraveled terrain, and write to define or change the world we live in.

The books we publish aim to make sense of the world, from Max Hastings’ accounts of the wars that shaped the twentieth century to Professor Brian Cox and David Attenborough’s adventures into life’s biggest questions. We champion books that explain the machinations of politics and power with David Cameron, Madeline Albright and Patrick Radden Keefe, and books that expose the impact of great art and artists with Richard Holmes, Paula Byrne, Daniel Mendelsohn and Maya Jasanoff. Working with a range of authors from the bestselling and prize-winning to the brilliant debut, William Collins has forged a reputation for publishing books that investigate, challenge, and push forward the thinking of the day.

Tim Shipman gave us the first draft of modern political history with All Out War. With Farewell Kabul, Christina Lamb offered a definitive account of the war in Afghanistan. Kathryn Mannix changed the way we look at death in With the End in Mind, Margot Lee Shetterly revealed the unsung heroes behind the space race with Hidden Figures, and Peter Godfrey-Smith overhauled our understanding of intelligence altogether with Other Minds. We are also proud to be home to the New Naturalists: the longest-running natural history series in the world. And, though we have been publishing the Bible for over one-hundred and fifty years, we are now partnering with some of the biggest faith organisations across the globe to expand our religious publishing and match the modern day.

(Please note some of the wording on the next page isn’t editable, your application isn’t subject to a points score, the selection is random.)
