About the role

Data Engineer is an important role in the engineering team at 99designs. It is a senior individual contributor position that leads through influence and advocacy and collaborates effectively with delivery teams and stakeholders from the wider organisation. 

On a day to day basis, you will:

  • Help us architect, build, and scale our data engineering platform and practices.

  • Work on data collection and processing across the entire stack, from client-side event logging to ETLs, ensuring pipelines are reliable, efficient, testable, & maintainable.

  • Collaborate with engineers, as well as stakeholders from analytics, marketing, and product, to understand the data needs of the business and produce systems that enable better decision-making.

  • Embed yourself in product engineering teams to advance and accelerate major initiatives, splitting your time between delivering product value and making broader Data Engineering contributions.

  • Develop and maintain data definitions for internally available data sources.

  • Provide analytics support across the business

  • Ensure that our business-critical data is available, accurate and correct.

About you

Essential requirements

  • Minimum 5 years relevant commercial experience in data engineering/science/analytics roles.

  • Extensive programming skills with Python, Javascript, R and/or other relevant software/languages.

  • Strong knowledge of relational databases and query authoring (SQL).

  • Ability to analyse large data sets to identify gaps and inconsistencies and provide data insights.

  • Experience with modern software development techniques such as test-driven development, micro-service architecture and continuous delivery.

  • Experience with dev-ops tools and techniques, particularly Docker, Git, and AWS.

  • A positive mindset: equal parts curious, collaborative, and can-do.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • An eagerness to learn new languages, frameworks, and tools.

Preferred requirements

  • Knowledge and commercial application of machine learning, statistical analysis and modelling.

  • Experience with AWS’ data and analytics suite: Redshift, Spectrum, Athena, Glue, Kinesis, Lambda, SageMaker

  • A love of open-source, keeping things simple and building on the shoulders of giants.
