We are looking for an experienced social finance professional with a proven track record in making investments into small businesses, charities and/or social enterprises to join us as Investment Manager. You will join a fast-paced, close-knit team in the UK’s leading innovation foundation and have an instrumental role in broadening access to social finance for arts & cultural organisations.

About Nesta

Nesta is a global innovation foundation. We back new ideas to tackle the big challenges of our time. Our mission is to spark and shape new ideas that improve how the world works for everyone. We use our knowledge, networks, funding and skills - working in partnership with others, including governments, businesses and charities. We are a UK charity but work all over the world, supported by a financial endowment. Cultural Impact Development Fund (CIDF) is a new fund being developed by our expanding Arts & Culture Finance Team. The team works towards building a more financially resilient arts and cultural sector in the UK using the tools of repayable finance. We believe that resilient organisations are in a stronger position to take creative risks, innovate and thrive in an increasingly competitive operating environment. CIDF will provide unsecured finance and social impact monitoring and evaluation support to arts & culture organisations across England. In doing so, it will enable the sector to better articulate its impact to funders, policy-makers and the public. CIDF builds on the work of the pioneering Arts Impact Fund - the first dedicated social impact investment fund for the arts & cultural sector – which has made over 20 unsecured investments across a range of art forms and business models in England since 2015.

About the role

You will lead on the deal-making of the CIDF programme, including the end-to-end investment process, portfolio management and stakeholder communication. In particular, this role includes: Origination of new investment opportunities and development of Nesta’s network within the sector, including representing and presenting on our behalf at events Investment appraisal, including financial and social impact analysis, of organisations seeking finance, from review of initial business plans through to detailed due diligence and research Financial modelling – building and manipulating financial models to test business plans and to structure appropriate financial solutions to support organisations Preparation and presentation of investment applications to the CIDF investment committee Negotiation of terms and conditions with investees and oversight of preparation of legal documentation Portfolio management - monitoring and reporting of investee financial and social impact performance, maintaining close relationship with investees, including taking on the role of critical friend where necessary Preparing reports on investment and fund performance for CIDF’s internal and external stakeholders Working closely with the fund’s Impact Manager who will be responsible for building impact capabilities in applicants to the fund Line management of investment analyst (recruitment expected at the end of CIDF’s first year of operations)

To secure this exciting opportunity

Your proven experience of deal making into small businesses, charities and/or social enterprises, will include leading on a deal from origination through to due diligence and legal completion and managing investee relationships across a platform of investments. You’re a curious, open minded critical thinker who can engage colleagues in dealing with complex challenges. The ability to analyse historical financial performance and future projections and business and investment risks is essential as is the skill to develop mitigation strategies where appropriate.
