Overview of the role and responsibilities

This position offers a rewarding insight into the Commission’s enforcement role. As an Enforcement Team member, you will have the opportunity to learn new regulatory skills, work on a variety of enforcement projects using our different legal powers, and contribute to the strategic direction of our enforcement work.

You will be responsible for conducting high profile regulatory work, under the supervision of a Principal lawyer. You will need to be motivated, organised and enjoy working on a range of tasks and projects both individually and as part of a wider team.

Other responsibilities will include, assessing equality issues and identifying action that we may take, analysing compliance with legal and regulatory obligations, and work relating to our power to enter legally binding agreements under section 23 of the Equality Act 2006.

You will be working as part of a wider team who conduct cutting-edge litigation and interventions across a range of equality and human rights law. You will need to fulfil this role in a way that is in keeping with our values of fairness, dignity and respect, and display flexibility, accountability and initiative.

Team Responsibilities

This position offers a rewarding insight into the Commission’s regulatory enforcement role as well as an opportunity to develop your legal and/or regulatory skills and knowledge of equality law.

The key responsibilities of the Enforcement Team include:

  • Delivering high quality enforcement work in accordance with the Commission’s strategic priorities.

  • Managing a portfolio of enforcement matters, including binding legal agreements and high profile regulatory enforcement work such as investigations.

·         Identifying opportunities for use of the Commission’s enforcement powers to maximise positive impact.

  • Working with other teams within the organisations (legal and non-legal), exchanging specialist knowledge and skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Qualified solicitor, barrister, advocate/solicitor advocate (or other equivalent legal qualification) entitled to practice in England and Wales, with post-qualification experience. Alternatively, if not qualified or not entitled to practice in England and Wales, an equivalent level of skills and experience.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:

  • Ability to draft complex legal documents, and to translate legal concepts and advice into clear, concise language

  • Ability to evaluate information and evidence, identify key issues and use sound judgement to make appropriate conclusions and recommendations including to improve practices, policies and legislation

  • Ability to monitor, analyse and report on performance and impact across your areas of responsibility, and to contribute to maximising that performance and impact

  • Excellent organisational and project management skills, with an ability to manage and prioritise your work and others, ensuring that agreed deadlines are met and that work remains within budget

  • Ability to work as part of a team, including with other lawyers and non-legal staff, to contribute to the delivery of high quality enforcement work

  • Experience of communicating effectively with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders
