Job Purpose 

To lead and drive a sustainable and inclusive volunteering model with diverse opportunities for volunteers, and be responsible for shaping the key role that volunteers play in delivering our vision of More Nature, Everywhere.

Reporting Line

The post holder reports to the Community Engagement Director

Line Management

Line management responsibility for Volunteering Development Manager and Volunteering Administrator

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and manage a cohesive and inclusive volunteering strategy for BBOWT ensuring that at its core it places the value of volunteers and works towards a demonstrable and sustainable increase in the diversity of volunteers

  • Oversee the development and delivery of volunteering guidance, procedures and policies to ensure that volunteering is delivered in an effective, efficient and safe way with EEDI at its core

  • Develop projects with the wider BBOWT team to create relevant and accessible volunteering opportunities

  • Build strategic relationships and project opportunities with external regional volunteer management organisations

  • Lead the volunteering team to ensure that an excellent and rewarding volunteering experience is had by new and existing volunteers

  • Work across all teams to increase the impact of volunteering

  • Lead on the implementation of a new volunteering management system

  • Any other duties as delegated by the Chief Executive

Person Specification

  • Demonstrable skills and experience of leading volunteering programmes

  • Demonstrable experience of creating and leading innovative people-focussed projects

  • Solid experience of collaborative working within charity and/or volunteering sector

  • Practical and creative problem solver

  • Demonstrable record of achievement in a leadership role at senior management level within an organisation of comparable size, scope and complexity

  • Knowledge and understanding of current volunteering issues within the third sector and how they relate to an organisation of the scope and scale of BBOWT

  • Knowledge and understanding of volunteering best practice, policy and innovation 

  • Experience of effectively developing high performing teams whilst instilling a strong sense of accountability and empowerment

  • Open, confident and collegiate with the ability and willingness to challenge constructively, and to receive challenge, and to work effectively at senior levels internally and externally

  • Competent in use of MS Office functions such as Word and Outlook with advanced Excel skills

  • Ability and willingness to demonstrate the BBOWT behaviours and values

  • Current UK valid car driving licence

  • Achievement and evaluation of volunteering strategy outcomes

  • Significant uplift in number of sustainable and diverse opportunities available for new or existing volunteers

  • Effective use of volunteering management system by staff and volunteers

  • Excellent performance against volunteering key performance indicators

  • Feedback from volunteers
