Job Description
The Health Review Specialist supports the enrollment and success of Expedition and Custom Education students through the thorough assessment of students’ Health Forms. This position gathers and reviews students’ health histories, writes fact-based summaries for use by necessary staff and faculty, and makes decisions and/or recommendations to the Risk Management Director regarding student eligibility. The Health Review Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring students with complex mental and physical health histories meet course eligibility criteria or have an approved exception and accommodation. This person is the bridge between students and instructors, gathering information from students and presenting it to instructors via thorough and well-organized write-ups. This person manages a high volume of health reviews, and has the opportunity to connect with students and their families about a variety of health topics, contributing toward students’ best possible chance for success on their NOLS course.

What does a Health Review Specialist do?
You will be involved in the following activities:
Assessing students’ eligibility for a NOLS course based on Essential Eligibility Criteria and Health Review Guidelines
Scheduling and completing calls with enrolled students, guardians, and health care providers to follow up on complex physical and mental health history
Writing concise, factual summaries of follow up calls
Documenting pending and completed workload in spreadsheets
As needed, working with Risk Management Director to assess eligibility for students who fall outside NOLS’ Essential Eligibility Criteria or Health Review Guidelines
Holding difficult conversations with students and families, discussing sensitive topics and as necessary, communicating that enrollment is denied for medical reasons
Training Expedition Admissions team members on the health review process and answering questions from Admissions staff regarding specific health forms
Annual review of health form documents and the health review process, incorporating student feedback as appropriate
This position requires working some evenings and weekends to accommodate availability of students and families, allowing opportunities for a flexible or varied work schedule

Ability to hold inclusive conversations and work with students from diverse backgrounds

Ability to work under pressure in high stress situations
Preferred: Spanish language proficiency
In your first 6 months, you will:
Complete complex health reviews for students on summer, fall, and winter courses, and start working on spring 2024 courses.
With colleagues, continue working toward improvements on the Health Form and Health Review Guidelines.
Offer as-needed training for incoming Expedition Admissions Officers and provide quarterly training or re-freshers on certain topics to the Expedition Admissions team.
Share details of the health review process with location staff during seasonal staff onboarding.
