Project Description:

Sustainable Space Exploration: A Community Engagement Initiative at Spaceport Cornwall

Key Components:

Environmental Assessment Conduct an analysis of Spaceport Cornwall's current environmental practices, identifying areas for improvement in waste management, energy consumption, and ecological impact.

Stakeholder Engagement Collaborate with local authorities, spaceport management, and environmental organizations to gain insights, support, and guidance. Forming partnerships will be integral to the success of the project.

Sustainability Workshops Develop and conduct workshops to educate spaceport staff on sustainable practices. Topics will include energy efficiency, waste reduction, and the integration of eco-friendly technologies.

Community Outreach Engage with the local community to raise awareness of sustainable space initiatives. This can be achieved through educational programs, public talks, and interactive activities.

Implementation Plan Propose feasible, no-cost or low-cost sustainability solutions for immediate implementation at Spaceport Cornwall. Emphasize practical measures that can be integrated within the project's 8-week timeframe

Applicant Specification:

The successful applicant will develop a number of both hard and soft skills whilst working on this project.

Technical Skills

Applicants will develop skills in conducting comprehensive market research and surveys to gauge community interests and preferences. They will gain expertise in planning and managing diverse events, from educational workshops to community engagement activities. By creating informative materials such as brochures, posters, and online content they will learn to effectively communicate complex topics related to space exploration and sustainability. Applicants will develop skills in how to propose and implement sustainable practices, including waste reduction, energy efficiency, and landscaping with native plants.

Human Skills

Applicants will cultivate effective communication and collaboration skills while engaging with local authorities, educational institutions, and environmental organizations. Furthermore, they will develop interpersonal skills to build strong relationships within the community and create a sense of trust and collaboration. The project will foster an understanding of diverse perspectives within the community, ensuring inclusivity in event planning and workshops. They will gain experience in managing a project from planning to execution, including time management, resource allocation, and problem-solving. They will excel their leadership skills in coordinating volunteer efforts during the clean-up day and collaborating with a diverse team of experts and community members. They may learn to adapt to unforeseen challenges and changes in project dynamics, fostering flexibility in project execution. Finally, they will gain skills in empowering community members to actively participate in sustainability initiatives and take ownership of positive change.

Minimum requirements:

Spaceport Cornwall are looking for candidates that are enthusiastic, inquisitive, motivated, and self-starting to come and join our team for the summer.

Academic: Ideally a degree or Masters level student who can undertake this piece of work to tie in with the current studies.

- Be a quick learner, curious and creative.

- Be able to work independently and as part of a team.

- Be studying an appropriate qualification or equivalent.

- Have knowledge of the space sector

Process details:

  • 8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate

  • In-person Induction Event to be held on [date], and an in-person/hybrid Showcase Event to be held at the [place/date]

  • 5 days holiday to be taken during the placement
