Job Description

The NIoT exists to boost the quality of teaching and school leadership by carrying out research, applying the insights to our professional development programmes, and sharing findings with the sector. Our programmes are designed by teachers and leaders who understand the joys and pressures of school life. 

The National Institute of Teaching’s Marketing and Communications function is responsible for building the NIoT brand, raising our profile in the education sector, and promoting our professional development programmes for teachers at every stage of their career. The Marketing & Communications team consists of three people, including the Director of Marketing and Marketing Manager. As a team, we work closely with the NIoT’s four Regions, our four founding Multi-Academy-Trusts and the Associate Colleges as our core partners.  

The successful candidate for this role will have strong communication skills and the ability to form strong and trusted relationships with this growing group of key stakeholders, ensuring that our we speak with one voice and that all our communications are clearly school-led. 

As the Communications Manager, you will be responsible for the full breadth of communication efforts, covering our website and social media, brand, materials, reports, events and newsletters.  

This is a role with great variety and much to stimulate a communications expert with a desire to make a difference. 

Main duties and responsibilities:  

  • Support the Director of Marketing and Comms to build our brand within the education sector 

  • Work in close partnership with the incoming Marketing Manager on campaigns to attract participants across all programmes 

  • Support the execution of the NIoT’s Communication’s Strategy by engaging schools, teachers, current participants and alumni of NIoT programmes across relevant online and offline methods (e.g. events, social media campaigns etc). 

  • Develop the brand guidelines and support our key stakeholders to live by these guidelines, ensuring that we develop a clearly distinct NIoT voice, look and feel 

  • Work closely with our Research & Best Practice function to ensure that our research is accessible and published in line with our brand guidelines and in support of our school-led approach, including advising on key messages and new digital-friendly formats and platforms  

  • Co-ordinate and support relevant events (centrally and in our four regions) that support recruitment, launch NIoT research (e.g., report launches) or build our brand 

  • Manage our website and social media feeds 

  • Set up internal and external newsletters and other ways to support  staff and stakeholder engagement  

  • Support the Director of Marketing and Communications to  provide communication counsel and materials for regional teams 

 

Essential skills 

  • A commitment to the aims of the National Institute of Teaching 

  • Strong stakeholder engagement experience, including establishing good working partnerships with a range of key stakeholders  

  • Strong experience of media relations and building relationships with journalists 

  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills 

  • Attention to detail and previous experience in defining a brand  

  • Experience with website analytics tools to help us track and monitor our engagement 

  • Confidence and skill in using and analysing data to inform and shape our overall communications approach 

  • Strong digital communications experience, including social media, digital communications campaigns, website management and analytics 

  • Experience of managing stakeholder and parliamentary events, webinars and workshops  

  • Ability to build collaborative and consultative relationships across the organisation, and work to align varied, often competing, interests 

  • Creativity and solution-orientation to help us build new communication processes and channels, internally and with our partners 

  • A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. 

 

Desirable skills 

  • Previous experience of working with a PR agency  

  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics or CRM 

  • Previous experience of working in a distributed team where key stakeholders are based across the country 

  • Some experience of the education sector  

  • Some public affairs experience
