Job Description

We're looking for two passionate campaign strategists to prevent gas expansion and protect our environment and climate. Join our Australian Gas team to build bold campaigns that drive real-world change and help accelerate the shift beyond fossil fuels. Keep reading to learn more about what these roles entail.

About Us

Driven by the imperative of climate justice, The Sunrise Project is a global network of changemakers working to drive the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. We support hundreds of partners, move millions in funding to grassroots movements, and coordinate bold campaigns that shift the public narrative, shift finance, and challenge the social licence of fossil fuel companies.

Founded in Australia in 2012, we activate and operate a unique model of grant-making and campaigning to achieve large-scale, global impact. Today, Sunrise is a global network of three independent organisations that share a common mission and values and drive aligned strategies.

With a geographically distributed team across Australia, The Sunrise Project Australia (TSPA) is one of the largest funders and climate impact makers within the region. Making ~$40m in grants in line with our program strategies, we fund the most climate progressive Australian universities, think tanks, activist organisations, and grassroots groups and support them to work together for large-scale impact.

We're a values-driven team that thrives on collaboration, creativity and purpose. Our culture is inclusive, flexible and supportive, helping people do their best work on big, urgent challenges. You can read about our values here

We value diversity in all its forms and strongly encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people of colour, people with disabilities, people outside urban centres, and LGBTQIA+ folks. We're committed to being a welcoming and inclusive place to work.

About The Roles

Australia is one of the top three global exporters of LNG. The gas industry is responsible for 10% of Australia’s domestic emissions, and emissions from burning the gas Australia exports are greater still. The Sunrise Project’s Australian Gas program aims to prevent the expansion of LNG exports in order to reduce global emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.

We’re hiring two Senior Strategists with focuses on the Northern Territory (NT) and Western Australia (WA), with an emphasis on preventing major gas expansion in order to reduce global emissions and protect the environment.

These roles involve working with movement allies to develop and implement strategies that prevent gas expansion and accelerate a fair phase-out of fossil fuel extraction. You’ll play a key role in building alignment, supporting high-impact campaigns, identifying powerful intervention points, and helping to grow the broader movement for climate justice.

We support networks of organisations to work together to achieve environmental and social outcomes that would not be possible by individual organisations acting alone. All roles at Sunrise contribute to building the strength and capacity of these networks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of campaign strategies to prevent gas expansion, especially in WA and/or NT;

  • Identify and support impactful policy, financial, or narrative interventions;

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with movement partners and allies, and provide strategic campaign advice and support to help run and scale high impact campaigns;

  • Convene and support networks and allies working to shift power and prevent gas expansion;

  • Work with organisations to design and evaluate grant proposals;

  • Contribute to narrative strategy, media responses, and campaign communications;

  • Integrate justice, equity, diversity and inclusion into strategy, planning and team culture;

  • Contribute to the overall work and culture of the Australian Gas team.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in campaigning, advocacy or organising that has achieved real-world change

  • Strong strategy development skills, including power analysis and planning

  • Experience collaborating with others in complex environments

  • Excellent facilitation, interpersonal and communication skills

  • Strong political judgement and problem-solving skills

  • Commitment to climate action and social justice

  • Desirable: Experience working in climate, fossil fuels, or with impacted communities

  • Desirable: Familiarity with the WA or NT political, legal, or social context.

Job requirements

  • You must have full working rights for Australia. The Sunrise Project is unable to sponsor applicants for employment visas.

  • Intermittent travel domestically, rurally and internationally with advanced notice may be required.
