Summary of Role

Our Net Zero & Climate Solutions team provides clients with exceptional technical expertise combined with a strategic and rational approach to developing innovative climate programs that deliver measurable impact. Our team combines thought leaders and technical practitioners from varied backgrounds: consultancies, corporations, and the NGO community. The world needs more smart, ambitious and savvy sustainability professionals – a position with Anthesis will provide you the platform and network to make a real difference in the fight against climate change.

 

We are looking for an Associate Director to lead our Carbon Markets services team, which supports Anthesis global offerings by bringing innovative sustainability solutions to clients. You will be leading a growing team and taking full accountability for expanding our existing Carbon Markets services, tools and ecosystem of partners -- in close collaboration with (and reporting to) the Net Zero & Climate Solutions Lead and Operations Lead, as well as counterparts in other Anthesis regions. Your projects and clients will span a diverse set of industries, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to boutique brands, and require engagement with clients, their suppliers, and their various stakeholders (e.g. employees, investors, associations and NGOs) around the world with a focus on helping these clients take action on reducing, offsetting and/or removing carbon from their value chain, enabling their decarbonization journey.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on high impact consulting projects across our portfolio of Net Zero & Climate Solutions services, including renewable energy, greenhouse gas management, net zero and science based targets, carbon emissions projections modeling, carbon removals, environmental justice, climate adaptation, sustainability reporting, stakeholder engagement, project management, water, and waste.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Anthesis North America’s Carbon Markets services and related product solutions. Specifically, this service area includes carbon offsets (avoided emissions), regenerative agriculture projects and programs, and carbon removals (including nature-based solutions and engineered solutions (e.g. direct air capture).

  • Take the lead and support the development of new business for Carbon Markets services including developing technical specifications and manage request for proposal from clients looking to source carbon instruments or developing carbon removal programs

  • Support the development of Anthesis North America’s thought leadership and marketing materials in relation to Carbon Markets, including carbon offsets and removals strategy, project development and accounting and reporting.

  • As a senior subject matter expert, develop and provide supervision, guidance and technical leadership to clients and colleagues on leading practices, standards, and trends and incorporate this knowledge into projects and the evolution of new services related to carbon offset and removals strategy, procurement and reporting, and also Science-based Targets setting and Net Zero roadmaps for clients that meet or exceed their needs.

  • Identify and develop carbon offset, removal, and/or supply chain insetting projects and measures (i.e. in concept) as well as source partnership opportunities with carbon markets partners that align with leading frameworks such as SBTi and Net Zero, Gold Standard Supply Chain Interventions Guidance, etc.

  • Complete technical due diligence of carbon instrument projects, partners or programs at-large on behalf of Anthesis and/or clients, including avoidance and carbon removal project types.

  • Develop and maintain a network of buy- and supply-side partners to enable Anthesis to participatie in carbon markets including short- and long-term procurements and direct project investment.

  • Maintain existing and build new relationships with other sustainability consultants, regulatory entities, software vendors, project developers and related ecosystem product/service partners, including carbon registries, and GHG standards organizations to advise on protocols and program requirements.

  • Manage and supervise large, complex and dynamic consulting projects throughout their entire project cycle: initiation, planning, design, execution, monitoring, QA and closure.

  • Lead and directly manage teams across practices and geographies, including selecting and managing teams for client projects.

  • Support team members with implementation of carbon offset and removals strategy development and related transaction or further advisory support to clients, and oversee their technical review.

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to team members, including expansion of the team through recruiting.

  • Manage your team members, including (but not limited to) regular check-ins, performance reviews and goal setting, providing regular, constructive feedback on performance, and generally supporting team members with career path development guidance.

  • Contribute to financial, operational and strategic success for relevant aspects of the service line, working closely with the Solution Operations Leader and related internal support resources as appropriate.

Key Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience as a sustainability/carbon/climate practitioner, ideally in a consultancy environment, carbon markets brokerage or project development, and/or related corporate or NGO roles with a demonstrated understanding of  GHG emissions accounting and reporting and carbon markets.

  • Bachelor’s degree (although ideally a Master’s degree or higher) in Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Economics, Mathematics or other sustainability-related disciplines.

  • Ability to work at and navigate all levels of an organization, driving decisions and direction through influence, including executive and senior business stakeholders.

  • Highly organized with strong project management skills, interpersonal skills, and a professional presence with the ability to quickly establish personal credibility and demonstrate expertise.

  • Demonstrated experience and deep working knowledge of the GHG Protocol and related GHGP Standards (e.g. Scope 2 Standard, Product Standard, Scope 3 Standard, etc.) as well as emerging accounting, reporting and target setting standards (e.g. Science-based Target Initiative, WRI, CDP, Gold Standard, VCS, TCSVM).

  • High comfort level in developing new methodologies on emerging topics with minimal external guidance.

  • Ability to lead qualitative and quantitative analyses including use of software tools (in-house and 3rd party partners) to complete projects that cover:

o   GHG Scope 1-2-3 emissions accounting and reporting.

o   Related topics including decarbonization and net zero strategy, modeling and analysis around carbon impact, carbon pricing, carbon abatement curves, price forecasting, and project cash flows.

  • Proficiency with demonstrated experience providing GHG emissions accounting and reporting services and related carbon markets support in some or all of the following:

o   Strategy development, strategic goal setting and KPI selection on priority climate-related topics (e.g. Science-based Targets)

o   SBTI’s Forest Land and Agriculture (FLAG) emerging standard

o   Nature-based solutions

o   Regenerative Agriculture methods, techniques, project types and accounting complexities

o   Soil Carbon, Biomass Carbon and Biogenic accounting

o   Engineered solutions/ Direct Air Capture/ Carbon Capture and Sequestration

o   EEIO spend-based emissions accounting methodologies

o   Climate / Sustainability-related reporting using leading frameworks e.g., CDP, GRI, SASB, Integrated Reporting and TCFD

  • Competency at building relationships across functions within client organizations to enable opportunities for improvement and expanding our scope of services.
