Job Description
Summary
We are the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.
Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as our Unpath’d Waters Evaluation Officer.
This post is a 3 months Fixed-Term contract.
The location of this role is National where we offer hybrid working, you will be based in one of our following offices and from home - Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Portsmouth (Fort Cumberland) and Cambridge.
Are you a creative and critical thinker looking to diversify your CV for your next career move? Are you curious about evaluation as a way of learning and improving the way we work? Can you work constructively across multiple high performing teams to collect information and marshal it into a coherent narrative? Do you want to know more about our public value framework and how to use it?
This is a rare opportunity for a novice or early career evaluation researcher to work as part of our Evaluation Team on assessing the success of the three-year Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded Unpath’d Waters project against our public value framework.
What you will be doing
Using your critical thinking, communication and relationship skills, you will work with the Analytics Director to deliver a structured and objective appraisal of this high profile UK‑wide project. Your focus will be on collecting and analysing information and drafting an evaluation report under supervision with a view to joint authorship of the final report to AHRC.
Some travel to Historic England’s partners’ offices and site visits may be required to support the implementation of evaluation activities such as focus groups.
Who we are looking for
At least degree-level or equivalent qualification, ideally in one of the social sciences
A strong track record of organising, prioritising and delivering outputs to a tight timetable
Demonstrable project management skills and experience
Good IT skills, including the ability to use software for basic data analysis and communication

We are an inclusive employer and believe that flexible working options are for everyone. We want to make sure our working arrangements don’t prevent anyone from joining us because of their personal circumstances. We also want to provide you with the best balance in your home and work life that we can.
We are open to considering options including job sharing, part-time working, compressed hours working and different working locations, including hybrid working. Please visit our jobs pages or contact us to find out more.
