Summary

We are the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.

Historic England have a exciting new position for you to become our Head of Engineering.

The Technical Conservation Team in the National Specialist Services Department specialises in the care, repair and conservation of buildings, structures and landscapes.  We set standards and provide specialist technical services and strategic leadership on the technical aspects of the care, repair, maintenance and adaptation of the historic built environment.  We do this by developing and promoting evidence-based technical policy and best practice and by providing specialist guidance to support those who care for and make decisions about the stewardship of the historic environment.

What you will be doing

As a member of the Technical Conservation leadership team, you will lead Historic England’s engineering function and have responsibility for both the Building Services Engineering and Structural Engineering teams.  You will provide strategic leadership to the teams in their role of providing high quality specialist technical services and expert capability; ensuring their role of developing, maintaining and promoting appropriate standards, guidance and best practice on the application of building services engineering and civil & structural engineering is directed in support of national and regional corporate priorities.

You will lead the closer integration of these teams to maintain and enhance a powerful and nationally recognised centre of excellence in all aspects of the application of engineering to the repair, maintenance and adaptation  of the historic built environment. You will do this by forging close links with Regional Delivery teams and other teams in Historic England; you will drive the development of diverse income streams for services (including provision of Shared Service support) to increase the resilience of the teams and Historic England.

What we are looking for:

  • A Chartered Engineer

  • Proven track record and wide-ranging post-qualification experience in a relevant discipline

  • Experience of leading, motivating and developing a multi-disciplinary team

  • Strong influencing and negotiating skills, including an ability to think quickly and mediate complex issues and problems in challenging circumstances

  • Ability to build credibility quickly and effectively through demonstrating sound knowledge, experience and judgement

  • Ability to communicate persuasively with staff at all levels, and with colleagues and a diversity of external partners, both verbally and in writing, in a manner which instils and inspires confidence
