Job Description

Salary: A$100,000 p.a. plus super

Location: Sydney or Melbourne, with flexibility to work remotely

About the Role

At Blackbird, our mission is to be a generational owner of the most ambitious tech companies founded by Aussies and Kiwis. To match this ambition as we grow, we are constantly striving to build a world-class Operations function to empower the wider Blackbird team to deliver on key initiatives and to ensure that we are a transparent and fully-compliant financial services organisation.

We are looking for a high-performing, detail-oriented Fund Accountant who will assist with the day-to-day financial operations of the Blackbird Funds. You will work closely with our Fund Accountant, Sam Broadley and report to our Fund Accounting Manager, Sue Zann Wong.

This role is full-time, based in our Sydney or Melbourne office with the flexibility to work from home.

Role Responsibilities

Here is an overview of the type of work the role will encompass:

  • Financial reporting: Reconciling the Funds’ balance sheets. Preparing the Funds’ quarterly Net Asset Value Statements. Assisting with the audit and preparing the draft financial statements. Preparing capital account statements for investors.

  • Tax compliance: Compiling information for the external tax advisers and managing the process of disseminating tax statements to investors. Preparing quarterly BAS reports for the Funds. Reviewing the Funds’ tax returns prepared by the external tax advisers.

  • Cash management: Forecasting the Funds’ cash needs for capital calls. Ensuring that all capital calls have been received from investors, and all distributions have been successfully paid to investors.

  • Investor relations: Answering any queries investors might have on their investment holdings or the Blackbird Funds, including regulatory reporting for our institutional investors. Assisting with the creation of quarterly investor packs and compiling fund performance metrics.

  • Process improvement: Constantly looking for ways to streamline and automate our processes as we scale. Assist with the implementation of a new fund accounting system.

Position Requirements

Ideally, you would have hands on and proven experience in fund accounting, with a strong foundation in financial operations such as reconciliations, tax and reporting. Experience with Xero helps, though it is not essential.

Your background is less important than the key skills, which include:

  • Reconciliations: The ability to reconcile differences between the books and sources of truth, and taking action to resolve those differences in a timely manner.

  • Investment knowledge: Familiarity with concepts such as carried interest, IRR hurdle rates and investment revaluations.

  • Technical accounting and tax knowledge: A solid working knowledge of accounting standards and tax legislation.

  • Proficiency in Excel/Google Sheets: Be comfortable working with spreadsheets on a day-to-day basis.

  • Communication: The ability to communicate well with both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ownership: The ability to take ownership of assigned tasks, including thorough self-review of work.

  • Attention to detail: Being extremely detail-oriented and organised.

  • Hospitality mindset: A hospitality mindset, whether it’s helping out a colleague above and beyond your role, or providing great customer service to our founders and investors.

We’re looking for someone who is as passionate as us about building an iconic investment business. You must have a high ownership mentality and the ability to take responsibility for goals and outcomes.
