Remuneration:
Adjusted based on location, for example £45-60k in the UK. We aim for our salaries to be within a range between the average and the 75th percentile of the relevant benchmark for organisations of a comparable size (where directly comparable roles exist), while accounting for local context and cost of living

About You

You’re an experienced communications professional with a knack for telling simple, powerful stories that synthesise complex issues and cut through a crowded media landscape. You’re skilled at developing big picture strategy, and a team player with excellent interpersonal communications skills and the ability to work effectively with our partner groups to support them to do their best communications work. You’re passionate about solving the climate crisis and winning campaigns. Ideally, you have an economics background by education or experience.

 About The Role

Working with Sunrise Project campaign leads and network partners, the Senior Communications Campaigner will lead the development and execution of the communications strategy for our campaign aimed at Central Banks to regulate financial institutions through their policies and operations, ensuring we see Paris-aligned climate action in key economies.

The role will focus on supporting work in three main areas:

Developing & implementing communications strategies

  • Proactively identify opportunities and moments to tell the complex story of Central Banks and financial regulation; their role in solving the climate crisis simply and effectively

  • Ensure a communications perspective is reflected  across all stages of strategic decision making on the Central Banks program;

  • Helping to manage the strategy and vision for greencentralbanking.com by actively advising and participating in the planning of its content 

  • Work with the other communications campaigners to identify gaps in Sunrise’s communications approach and that of the broader climate movement focusing on finance

  • Create and understand campaign frames, messages and talking points on different central banks, such as the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve;

  • Develop analysis and reframing post-breaking news that maximizes opportunity and new strategies;

  • Work with the digital campaigner to determine the targeted audiences and channels (including social and paid advertising) which are best suited for our campaign messages;

  • Closely advise network partners on a communications strategy that benefits our shared goals

  • Produce messaging briefs/narratives for partners around important events and campaign moments.

  • Onboard, orient, and manage additional communications capacity as needed during peak escalation moments

Create campaign communications materials

  • Write media releases and website content

  • Work with the Sunrise team and partner organisations to develop tailored communications material including reports and other assets.

Engaging with and pitching to media

  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with key journalists and editors, briefing them on key issues facing central banks on climate;

  • Develop and pitch compelling stories ideas media stories to mainstream and niche finance/economics industry media outlets, including supporting investigations

  • Drive rapid response to breaking stories, including coordinating network response, developing materials that maximise opportunities, and sustained follow-up.

Required skills and experience    

  • At least 5 years’ experience in a similar or related role including unpaid, grassroots or lived experience;

  • Strong and proven ability to coordinate and strengthen media work across many partners ;

  • Mastery of communications strategy and storytelling: can develop mission-driven plans to reach target audiences and achieve results;

  • Strong writing and editing skills, with an ability to understand and analyse complex policy issues and communicate them clearly and compellingly to targeted audiences;

  • Media relations experience including pitching and landing top-tier media;

  • Willingness to learn and develop expertise in finance areas including mandates of Central Banks, various policy tools and their implementation;

  • Experience managing staff and projects and navigating coalition spaces

  • A passion for action on climate change and a commitment to social justice;

  • Knowledge of economics, specifically of central banks, is desirable, experience as a financial journalist would be an asset

  • You must have full working rights for the country in which you are based.
