Job Description

Project Description:

Space Forge is developing a compact and deployable heat shield that will be opened up in orbit and be used to protect our satellites returning from space. The successful SPINtern working on this project will be able to get hands-on experience supporting our engineers to build prototypes and test campaigns of the deployment system, as well as modeling and analysis of its non-linear deployment torques and forces.

Launching things to space is hard, and expensive. Being able to make systems and mechanisms lightweight and more effective is key to ensuring your products have a competitive price. Deployable systems, like a heatshield, not only allow to save space but also reduce the costs associated with the mass of similar rigid systems. With the goal of using space for the benefit of humankind, Space Forge is developing a compact and deployable heat shield that will be opened up in orbit and be used to protect our satellites returning from space.

During this project, the applicant will learn about:

The space hardware engineering process

Mechanical, thermal and structural requirements and design of space hardware

Qualification of space hardware

Testing, assembly and verification of space hardware

Non-linear behaviour of space deployable systems
