Job Description

In order to support the continued electoral success of the Green Party, alongside the rapid expansion and development of the Green Party Digital Team, we are currently seeking a Senior Digital Officer (Software Developer). As a key member of the team, you will have a unique opportunity to evolve the party’s systems and shape our campaigning future.

The software developer will be required to create and modify front end code, back end code, databases and queries (in SQL) as well as performing some light Linux server administration. Your time will be split between writing original software, integrating 3rd party services and maintaining existing projects.

We mainly use PHP (and a little bit of NodeJs) so you will need to be proficient in the 'LAMP' stack: HTML5, JS, CSS3 on the front end and PHP, SQL and familiarity with working in a linux shell on the back end. You should also have a good working knowledge of GIT and be able to push code, create tags and resolve merge conflicts. You should also be able to test your code to ensure reliability and resilience.

Your responsibilities will vary. On some projects you will work together with other team members, perhaps acting as the lead developer on a project you are responsible for, or supporting them on a project they are driving. On other projects you will work autonomously and therefore will be expected to work directly with stakeholders rather than rely on a manager to provide designs, specifications, or relay requests and information.

You will need to have communication and organisational skills in order to manage your own work and conflicting priorities. The party has a number of scheduled events such as the AGM or Conference that require Digital work. However some events such as a surprise by-election, or a Prime Minister calling a General Election early mean that we have to respond without dropping the work we were originally doing. Such times demand a cool head, proactive organisation skills and the ability to work well with others in the staff team to both deliver what they need and manage their expectations.

As the needs of the party evolve we will sometimes be presented with the choice of adopting a 3rd party software or creating something in-house. You will be expected to contribute to this process through research and documentation in the form of white papers or presentations intended for the digital team and for a wider non-technical audience.
