Job Description

When meeting us, you’ll quickly discover that the best thing about the Association of British Insurers is the people.  We’re hugely proud that 98% of our people think individual differences are respected and we are empowered to bring our whole self to work without fear of judgment. If that sounds like your sort of culture, read on to find out how you can join us.

We are open to flexible, part time and/or job share working – please let us know if this would be your preference. We work in a hybrid way with at least 40% of time in the office.

We’re looking for a Public Affairs Assistant to join our Corporate Affairs team. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone with a passion for politics and an interest beyond Westminster.

You’ll be working alongside the Head of Public Policy on the ABI’s public affairs work in the devolved nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s a varied and fast-paced role with the opportunity to show your talents for policy analysis on behalf of ABI members and colleagues; producing ABI submissions for parliaments and governments; engaging with Ministers, their officials and with Members of the Scottish Parliament, Senedd and Northern Ireland Assembly.

We welcome people who are new to insurance (most of us were when we joined!) – as well as those with experience.

What’s the job?

  • Analysing policies and legislation relevant to insurance and long-term savings from the Scottish and Welsh Governments and Northern Ireland Executive.

  • Engaging with Ministers and their officials in the three devolved administrations, and with Members of the Scottish Parliament, Senedd and Northern Ireland Assembly.

  • Producing and presenting research and information for ABI member firms on insurance and long-term savings issues in the devolved nations.

  • Preparing briefing notes for senior colleagues in advance of meetings with key stakeholders.

  • Contributing to the ABI’s response to government and parliamentary consultations and enquiries.

  • Monitoring and summarising meetings of the Scottish Parliament, Senedd and Northern Ireland Assembly to brief members on relevant updates.

  • Working with wider ABI colleagues to help them understand policy work in the devolved nations in relation to UK-level issues.

  • Co-ordinate responses to letters from Parliamentarians and inquiries and undertaking political research.

What skills do you need?

  • Political nous – you understand and can explain politics and governance across the devolved nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and how they relate to UK Parliament and Government.

  • Making the technical accessible – you can summarise information in a way that is accessible for everyone and excite other people’s interest in public affairs, insurance and long-term savings.

  • Efficiency – organisation and high attention to detail come naturally to you.

  • Communication – your written communication is of a high standard and you have a good sense of how to build and manage your working relationships.

  • Teamwork – you work proactively with others and are willing to help your colleagues.

We encourage you to apply, even if you don’t have all the skills above right now.

Throughout the interview and assessment process, we will be looking for you to demonstrate our values; We are Brave; We take Ownership; We are Appreciative; We are Human and We are Curious.

Inclusion matters to us

We welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds and we run our application process a bit differently – we don’t assess based on your CV.
