We are looking for a VP of Legal to lead our team that focusses on high-growth and scaling startups. In this position, you are responsible for the daily operations of the Legal team. You will own the quality of client services, weekly capacity, and drive performance towards revenue and points amongst the Legal team. 


Your role at LUNA:

Driving Success Across Legal

  • Service Delivery: Own quality control of the Legal team for client delivery work to ensure all outgoing work is to the Luna standard. Performance manage and continually provide feedback to maintain and improve quality control. Act as the escalation point for all client delivery matters.

  • Resourcing: Triage client delivery pipeline to distribute capacity adequately. 

  • Legal Guru: The subject matter expert for all technical legal questions. 

  • Training: Own the Legal training program so that the team is trained on technical legal education, product offering, customer journey, and client experience.

  • Pricing: Regularly provide input and recommendations on our pricing structure. 

  • Product & Pricing: Regularly provide input and recommendations on our product offering. 

  • Client Relationships: Co-manage all Legal client relationships to ensure positive client relationships and quality control of client delivery work.

Legal Service Delivery

  • Brilliant Work: Deliver technically excellent and commercially sensible legal documents and advice, tailored to high-growth and scaling startup clients. This includes:

    • Venture Investment Transactions - SAFEs and convertible notes, venture debt, equity crowdfunding through to Series A/B priced equity raises and beyond.

    • Startup M&A - acquisitions and final exits.

    • Structuring Advice - advising on corporate restructuring and governance for scale.

    • Employee Incentives - including ESOPs, phantom share schemes and loan funded share plans.

    • General Commercial - the whole suite of BAU-style contracting, including SaaS and technology licensing.

  • Hit Targets: Hit individual quarterly revenue targets. 

Team Performance & Culture

  • Team Revenue Targets: Manage team to successfully hit quarterly revenue targets.

  • Team Meetings: Run weekly team meetings to drive performance towards weekly revenue targets.

  • Hiring: Recruit and hire Legal team headcount.

  • Team Performance: Manage performance of Legal team. Manage and mentor other Coaches so they successfully manage Coachee performance. Navigate team relations, promotions, and terminations. 

  • Coachee Mentoring: Manage and mentor Coaches. Provide Coaches with professional growth opportunities.

  • Team Culture and Connection: Foster team culture and promote LUNA Core Values. 

Operations

  • Systems: Ensure team adoption and usage of internal systems and tools, in line with LUNA best practices.


The Skills You Bring

You should apply if you:

  •  Have an LLB or JD gained from an Australian, or an international university, with at least 5 years of post admission qualified legal experience.

  • A good foundation at a reputable law firm and/or in-house team, working in the following areas.

    • A specialised focus on venture or commercial investment will be highly regarded.

    • Experience working across general corporate matters - corporate governance, employee equity and incentivisation, structuring and capital management (including cap table issues, share buy-backs and capital restructuring).

  • Strong drafting, review and negotiation skills across the suite of investment transactions.

  • An ability to work autonomously – leading, managing and executing on a range of investment and corporate transactions from end to end.

  • Strong and demonstrated coaching and management skills, working well with a team of legal pros.

  • Are based in Melbourne, Byron or Sydney

  • Are eligible to work in Australia 

  • Have experience or a strong interest in the startup world and working in a fast-paced, ever changing environment excites you.

It would be an added bonus if you have any of the following in your toolkit:

  • Have experience advising across a suite of startup needs.

  • Have started your own business or have experience working in a startup or venture capitalVC.

  • Skills or strong interest in business development and winning top quality work.

  • Understanding or experience in:

    • AI + Tech.

    • Delivery of legal services in an in-house or quasi in-house environment - to both legal and non-legal stakeholders.

    • Experience collaborating with lawyers or tax advisors to deliver outcomes for clients.
