About the Youth Endowment Fund

The Youth Endowment Fund is a bold new attempt to put early intervention at the heart of efforts to tackle youth offending.

In recent years there has been a significant increase in violent crime. Homicides, assaults, robberies and offences involving weapons have all seen sustained growth. For children and young people, there have been particularly large increases in those who are both the perpetrators and victims of offences involving knives. We believe it is vital to intervene early in children’s lives to tackle the root causes of crime and violence, and to stem this worrying trend.

The Youth Endowment Fund is a charity with a £200m endowment and a mission that matters. Founded by youth charity Impetus and its partners the Early Intervention Foundation and the Social Investment Business, we exist to prevent children and young people from getting caught up in violent crime. We do this by finding the best ways to prevent youth violence, funding promising initiatives and working to scale them up.

Some of the most successful work to reduce violent crime has been when local partners work together, share information and coordinate action. We want to establish the very best approaches to doing this, show clearly why they work and then support them being copied elsewhere. We call this our place-based work.

Key Responsibilities

You will lead our place-based work, making sure we do everything possible to find and spread the best ways to help local bodies to work together, sharing information and working in a coordinate way to make change happen. We are excited by the possibilities here, but realistic about the challenges and complexities involved.  You will make sure we navigate these challenges, giving local partnerships the best chance to succeed.

To do this you will:

·         Finalise our place-based strategy and put it into action. This means making sure that we have a ready-to-go plan for finding the most effective ways of getting local bodies to share information and coordinate activity so that violent crime falls.

·         Build and nurture strong partnerships across England and Wales that are ready to share information and work together to reduce crime.

·         Find the best way to ensure that partners get the help and support that they need to make our work a success. This could be direct support from you, the wider YEF team / our partners, or by bringing in external help.

·         Once we know more about what works in place-based crime reduction, help local partnerships across England and Wales know what works and learn about how to make it happen.

·         Ensure that we learn what works really effectively. Working closely with our Knowledge and Evaluation teams you will make sure we learn what, why, how and where things work (and don’t work).

·         As a senior staff member, you will also:

o   Help build a culture where it is natural to perform well and support colleagues brilliantly.

o   Help to inform the strategy, deliver results and build and model the culture that we need to succeed.

About You

You are this sort of person:

  • You understand young people. You understand what the lives of vulnerable young people can be like and you understand some of the organisations that work with them, ideally through first-hand experience. You have a good understanding of how the youth sector, public sector and schools operate.

  • You are fascinated and thoughtful on how change happens. You have the cognitive intelligence, emotional intelligence and experience to find the ways to make change happen when there are multiple stakeholders. You understand why people find change difficult. You come alive talking about how people make decisions and why they do the things they do. You are interested in behavioural change.

  • You win people over. People tend to warm to you and respect you. You have built good relationships with very senior people and with very junior people. You are comfortable talking to a Secretary of State, a youth worker, a company CEO, a teacher and an 11 year-old student. Listening to people from all backgrounds matters to you.

  • You learn fast but remain humble. You are very quick at getting your head around things. You like learning. You are very good at synthesising information. You are a great and supportive team player.

  • You believe evidence and research have an important role to play in improving local practice. You are passionate about making sure local planning and change is informed by the best available evidence.

  • You are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.

  • You make things happen. You have experience of getting to the heart of a strategy and turning it into operational plans. You especially excel in situations of ambiguity where there are not clear rules to follow, previous patterns to copy or clear evidence of what will work. You know attention to detail, clarity of purpose and strong project management matter.

You must have this sort of experience:

 You have…

  •  Built Partnerships:  You have significant experience in building strategic, long lasting partnerships. You can show how these have been effective in delivering impact for children and local communities.

  • Developed and Delivered Strategy:  You have significant experience of developing strategies. You can then translate them into great ideas and actions.

  • Managed complex projects:  You have significant experience of managing projects with a diverse range of stakeholders.

  • Experienced in this sector: You have experience of working with local leaders, youth practitioners and/or commissioners on strategy development or programme design.

You might have this sort of experience

It’s not necessary but it would be an extra bonus if you have…

-         Experience of turning evidence into credible messages, tools and advice relevant to local practice.

While it is not a criteria, we are especially interested to hear from applicants who have lived experience of youth violence.

It is also important to us that the people we hire do not discriminate. We believe in being inclusive and giving everyone an equal chance to succeed. Applications are welcome from all regardless of age, sex, gender identity, disability, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, religion or belief, race, sexual orientation, transgender status or social economic background.
