Job Description

The WEMT Manager oversees all programming aspects of the Wilderness Medicine Wilderness EMT program. This includes ensuring program quality for students, staff, clinical partners, and other external entities. The WEMT Manager will communicate with a broad range of external audiences including state and national EMS agencies, hospitals, media, representatives from the outdoor industry, and Wilderness Medicine staff and students. The WEMT Manager will also oversee operations at the Wyss Wilderness Medicine Campus in Lander, WY.

What does a WEMT Manager do?

The WEMT Manager will be involved in the following activities: 

Wilderness EMT Program Operations

  • Manage the WEMT program to ensure WEMT students have optimal outcomes and achieve a high rate of national certification.

  • Oversee WEMT specific Learning Management System development and usage, in association with the Wilderness Medicine Education Team.

  • Manage complex and challenging relationships critical to the viability and sustainability of the Wilderness Medicine WEMT program including: The National Registry of EMTs, State EMS agencies, hospital human resource departments and clinical coordinators, and Pearson VUE testing centers.

  • Maintain EMT curriculum certification and testing standards in accordance with state and national requirements, in association with the Wilderness Medicine Education Director.

  • Oversee course paperwork and reporting systems in accordance with internal and external standards

  • Oversee WEMT equipment management and advise Wilderness Medicine Director on asset acquisition.

  • Assist in the editing and development of Wilderness Medicine WEMT curriculum and materials in association with the Wilderness Medicine Education Director.

  • Manage Wilderness Medicine’s annual staff RTP in accordance with national and state standards. 

  • Manage risk management oversight of all WEMT program activities, including emergency procedures

  • Manage projects and initiatives that support Wilderness Medicine’s growth and enhance its services as directed by the Wilderness Medicine Director

Supervision 

  • Supervise the WEMT program specialist and Instructors in problem solving and policy application

  • Work with WEMT student discipline and separations including intervention and family contact 

  • Support after hours and weekend emergency calls for WEMT courses

  • Act as the Training Officer for Wilderness Medicine Instructors maintaining NREMT certification

  • Supervise the Wyss Wilderness Medicine Campus Facilities Manager

Instruction 

  • Maintaining an active teaching role in the WEMT program involves instructing a minimum of four courses annually and offering occasional coverage as required. This commitment totals approximately 100 instruction days per year, ensuring a consistent and high-quality educational experience for students.

This job position requires exceptional communication, organizational, managerial, and facilitation skills. The position also requires a strong background in wilderness and emergency medicine practice and education, and comfort and expertise navigating bureaucracy at state and national levels.

Other qualifications include:

  • Qualified NOLS Wilderness Medicine Instructor

  • Direct program administrative and supervisory experience

  • Wilderness EMT or higher level of training

  • Direct experience with NOLS Wilderness Medicine as a lead and/or preceptor-level instructor

  • State of Wyoming EMT Instructor Coordinator certification, or ability to obtain such certification

  • Proficiency with computer operations and educational technology tools, including Microsoft Office suite, Google Drive, and Canvas

In your first 6 months, you will: 

  • Work with the WEMT Program Specialist to ensure that each course is prepared, including pre-course paperwork and duplicating canvas courses. 

  • Supervise the WEMT Program and provide direct support with curriculum, daily flow, and any student issues.

  • Work with hospitals throughout Wyoming to ensure clinical placement for WEMT students each month. 

  • Teach two or more WEMT courses.
