Job Description

Portfolio Analyst

AirTree is looking to add a Portfolio Analyst to our team!

About AirTree

Based in Sydney, we’re one of the largest and most active venture capital funds in Australia and New Zealand. If you join us, you get to work with many of the most exciting startups in our region - Canva, A Cloud Guru, Secure Code Warrior, Prospa, Brighte, Athena, Joyous - the list goes on and on!  We raised our latest fund late 2019 and now manage over $600m.

We’re a down-to-earth team with a diverse set of backgrounds but the same passion: startups and technology. Our mission is to find and back the best Australian and Kiwi founders and help them achieve their vision. We are committed to building a world class VC platform in Australia. This is an opportunity to get involved early, help shape AirTree and make an impact on our region’s tech ecosystem.

We’ve written a lot about the work that we do at AirTree, check out our Medium page. Some key info to read: AirTree’s year in review 2019 and our team bios

About the role

This is a full time role.

This role is crucial to AirTree’s success and we’re looking for a critical thinker with a passion for technology. You will bring a combination of empathy, curiosity and  intellect to support the team to make better investment decisions. You will report directly to the Partners and become a key part of our investment team.

What you’ll do

You will focus on:

  • Analysis: helping us monitor and deepen our understanding of the performance of our existing portfolio with a view to helping us make follow on investments into them.  This will include reviewing traditional financial data as well as operational metrics which indicate product health or might be a signal for future revenue potential.

  • Reporting: implementing consistent reporting frameworks across the portfolio and working together with our founders to help them understand their businesses better.

  • Benchmarking: leading our thinking on valuations, metrics and benchmarking across technology sectors.

  • Due diligence: working together with us and founders to identify and understand great businesses.

  • Deal execution: managing the investment process and stakeholders such as lawyers.

What you won’t do

You won’t be expected to source new investments, take first meetings with companies or travel extensively.

About you

Your most important attribute is your passion for technology and startups.  For the right candidate, we will be flexible on background, but would particularly love to meet you if you have 1-3 years’ experience and have worked in any of these environments:

  • Another investment group, preferably focused on the Internet and software.

  • An advisory business such as an investment bank or consulting firm, with a focus on the Internet and new technologies.

  • A startup or technology business. If you’ve been involved in finance or product management, all the better.

Perhaps more importantly, you:

  • Are curious, and obsessed with technology companies (in fact you might be weird like us and like to talk about them for fun).

  • Are self-directed and flexible. You’re comfortable working in a fast paced environment with changing priorities.

  • Are a systems thinker. You relish organising chaos and implementing frameworks and systems that make us better investors.

Location and flexibility

The role is based in Sydney.

AirTree is a flexible, family-friendly workplace.

Diversity and inclusion

We celebrate and value diversity and we are committed to being inclusive in the way we hire and in the way our team works together.

The first step in our application process is fully anonymous. We won’t know any identifying information about you until your answers have been selected to go to the phone interview round.

We also strongly encourage you to apply even if you are not sure you fit all of the criteria we’ve mentioned. All our roles involve a range of skill sets and we recognise that everyone has different strengths and experiences that can add lots of value to our team.

How to Apply?

Submit your application using the instructions at the top of this page.

From the initial submissions we’ll select a smaller group for phone/video interviews with someone from our team or an external recruiting partner, and then a set of finalists for in-person meetings. We hope to finish the process by the end of March 2020 and have you working with us as soon as possible after that.

We can’t wait to meet you!
