Job Description
The Good Food Institute Europe is an independent nonprofit and think tank helping to build a more sustainable, secure and just food system by diversifying protein production.
We champion the science, policies and investment needed to make plant-based, fermentation-made and cultivated (made from cells) meat delicious, affordable and accessible across Europe.
By advancing plant-based foods, cultivating meat from cells and producing ingredients through fermentation, we can boost food security, meet our climate targets and support nature-friendly farming. We are at an exciting stage in our growth and are looking for a Communications Officer to accelerate our progress throughout Europe by showcasing the potential of protein diversification as a solution to climate, animal welfare and health challenges.
How you will make a difference
You will support the Communications team and wider programmatic teams in a wide range of areas. Reporting to and working closely with the Senior Digital Communications Manager, you will:
Plan and create written and visual content for communications channels such as our social media, newsletter, website, resources and media engagement work.
Monitor references to alternative proteins and related subjects in the press and on social media across Europe, identify opportunities to generate relevant content, and share updates with the wider team.
Perform maintenance activities for our multi-language website, including adding new content and updating existing pages and other digital platforms.
Support with content planning, formatting and sending of our monthly digital newsletter.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of our digital communications activities, social media channels, website and newsletter.
Contribute to and implement strategies to grow engagement among target audiences with our social media and other digital channels.
Assist with the relationship management of service providers such as designers.
Help to keep a calendar of GFI Europe’s communications activities up to date.
Perform other tasks as required as a member of our team.
Who we’re looking for:
We primarily hire for skills and potential rather than experience, so you do not need to have worked in a communications role before. The core skills and attributes needed to excel in the role are:
A passion for GFI’s philosophy and mission.
Digital communications experience: comfort with using a variety of digital tools and producing content for digital channels including social media.
Excellent written communication skills: the ability to develop compelling, accurate and error-free English-language content, tailored to our key audiences, for channels such as social media, newsletters and our website.
Good judgment and news sense: to successfully spot opportunities and ‘hooks’ to generate owned content, and to get the substance, tone and nuance of our message right.
Curiosity and compelling storytelling ability: to understand and turn complex narratives and technical content into accessible, engaging communications and adapt messaging across diverse national contexts while maintaining a coherent European voice.
Excellent people skills: High emotional intelligence with the ability to foster strong, positive and collaborative relationships with diverse groups of people at all levels in the organisation and stakeholders across multiple cultures and countries.
Strong prioritisation and organisational skills: to consistently follow through on commitments, reliably bring simultaneous tasks and projects to completion, ensuring that all aspects are addressed comprehensively and nothing is overlooked, and to allocate time effectively to manage competing deadlines.
Initiative and adaptability: adjusting to changing circumstances, priorities, and responsibilities while maintaining a high level of performance; openness and a positive response to varying cultural norms and perspectives; and actively identifying and pursuing ways to improve how we do things.
An eye for good design and user experience: the ability to recognise engaging visual content, and tailor content approaches across channels to maximise reach, engagement and resonance.
Tech savviness: comfort using various software tools and platforms in a remote workplace, and a willingness to learn and experiment with new systems. Training and support in Google Workspace, Asana, Salesforce and other key tools will be provided.

Our team’s common language is English, so you’ll need to be confident working in English.
It would be an advantage to have some or all of the following attributes, but none of them are prerequisites, and we welcome applications from candidates without any or all of them:
Strong advantage: Fluency in an additional European language, other than English.
A good understanding of the communications landscape in at least one country in Europe.
Experience of managing social media channels.
Experience with website maintenance, SEO and performance monitoring using Google Analytics.
Experience with graphic design and workflow management tools (eg, Gimp, Canva, Adobe Suite, Asana, Notion, AI tools).

The fine print:
Terms of employment: Full-time (flexible hours), permanent. Requests for part-time arrangements can be considered (minimum 30 hours per week).
Location: We can consider applicants in any of the following countries where we can currently employ people: Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and the UK. This is a remote role, and you will be able to work from home, or anywhere you choose. We are happy to consider supporting costs for co-working to enable you to work from an office if you wish. The whole GFI Europe team aims to get together in person approximately twice per year for around 3-5 days at a time. Travel costs will be covered by GFI Europe within our travel policy.
Salary and benefits: The salary and benefits package for all of our roles are researched and benchmarked based on similar nonprofit roles in the country/location of hire. Due to capacity, we cannot complete that research for every country in advance, but approximate indicative ranges (total annual amounts received in gross salary plus benefits including home-working allowance) are likely to be:
€2,706-€3,180 gross/month*. This range is an example based on a hire in Belgium and will be adjusted to match our benchmarking of the successful applicant’s country of work.
*in addition to 13th month and holiday pay for employees based in Belgium.
Right to work requirements: The successful candidate must, by the start of the employment, have permission to work in the country where they are based, and be able to travel within the EU.
