Job Description

Overview:

The UN Global Compact Network UK (UNGC UK) is part of the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest responsible business initiative. We connect UK companies and other organisations to a global movement dedicated to driving sustainable business and action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles, rooted in UN treaties, provide a robust foundation for our initiative. Our strategic plan has three pillars:

  • Inspiring business ambition to deliver the Global Goals;

  • Enabling practical action for sustainable business growth;

  • Shaping a responsible business environment.

The Network Secretariat work is guided by the core values of the UN – Integrity, Professionalism and Respect for Diversity – and nine additional values and behaviours of the UN Global Compact. Find out more here: https://www.unglobalcompact.org/about/the-un-global-compact-way.

Position summary:

The UN Global Compact Network UK is recruiting an Intern for a 3-month contract to support the operations of the Network Secretariat. This is a great opportunity for individuals wanting to pursue a career in the field of corporate responsibility and sustainable development.

The Intern will sit in the Executive Team and report to the Operations Manager. They will also collaborate with the Communications and Engagement Manager and the Member Engagement Project Manager.

While this role does not entail direct involvement in the programmatic work of the Network, the successful candidate will have several opportunities to learn about a wide range of corporate sustainability issues – such as the Sustainable Development Goals, Diversity & Inclusion, and Climate Change – and hear directly from leading organisations in this space.

Responsibilities:

Member engagement:

  • Responding to basic inquiries about the UN Global Compact and Global Compact Network UK;

  • Supporting application and onboarding processes of new members;

  • Assisting UN Global Compact participating organisations to comply with their reporting requirements, including by supporting the organisation and delivery of Communication on Progress (COP) workshops;

  • Supporting organisation and delivery of outreach activities and events.

Governance:

  • Supporting preparations of and follow up actions to meetings of UNGC UK’s Board and Advisory Group;

  • Supporting UNGC UK’s annual reporting process;

  • Supporting UNGC UK’s policies update.

  • Helping monitor compliance with the Local Network Quality Standards.

Operations:

  • Supporting the Operations Manager in circulating the bi-annual Speakers Diversity Survey and analysing results.

  • Helping to capture, analyse, and report UNGC UK’s Strategic KPIs;

The UN Global Compact Network UK has a very broad remit, but the Network Secretariat team is small, so the Member Engagement Intern may be required to support other activities from time to time.

Skills/Qualifications requirements:

  • Strong interest in social sustainability issues and a demonstrable knowledge of the UN Global Compact, and the responsible business agenda more generally;

  • Strong organisational skills;

  • Detail-oriented;

  • Sound communication skills (both written and oral);

  • Customer service orientation;

  • Ability to work both in a team and individually;

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines;

  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications (particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).

Please note that while this role is within the UN Global Compact Network UK Secretariat, the successful candidate will not be formally employed by the United Nations.
