London Advisory Committee vacancies

Historic England is seeking one or two candidates with expertise in archaeology to join its London Advisory Committee.  London’s archaeology is of exceptional significance and is subject to significant development pressures, whilst also providing valuable opportunities for public engagement and presentation.  Archaeological expertise is central to the work of this important Advisory Committee.

London Advisory Committee

The London Advisory Committee has a key role, advising on high profile development cases in one of the world’s most significant cities.  Its expert members ensure that the advice Historic England gives the best possible advice to government (at all levels) on what are often highly contentious proposals.   The Committee supports Historic England in fulfilling its statutory role under the National Heritage Act 1983 and other relevant legislation.

As a Committee member you will be required to:

  • attend approximately five meetings each year; meetings are usually of half-day duration and take place in the morning.  Additional meetings are sometimes required, and these will usually be virtual;

  • prior to meetings attend relevant site visits of roughly half a day’s duration, each attended by a small group of members;

  • share expertise with other LAC members and Historic England staff; and

  • participate in occasional day conferences and seminars to assist in Historic England’s strategic development.

Neither of the roles advertised require formal qualifications or professional status beyond experience of the areas of expertise and interest outlined above.  Candidates should, however, be able to demonstrate a willingness to challenge constructively, operate as part of a committee and be able to work alongside a broad range of professionals.
