Job Description

Are you looking for a new challenge and want to join a successful and growing organisation dedicated to creating social impact? Do you have a passion for public policy and behavioural science? If so, we want to hear from you.

The Behavioural Insights Team is the world leader in applying behavioural science to economic and social challenges in order to strengthen communities and improve lives. We want to apply behavioural insights in Indonesia to scale up our social impact. We will achieve this by designing and running randomised controlled trials, or RCTs, that test new innovations informed by behavioural science. Indonesia was already the site of our biggest ever RCT, with over 11 million participants (LINK). You can help build on this success by increasing our presence in Indonesia so we can continue to help Indonesians make better choices for themselves. We want you to be part of the growth of our team and help us build a strong and sustainable business based in Indonesia.

BIT works across the public and private sector in almost every area of policy. Whilst each project is different, there are common threads: we try to understand the contexts in which people make decisions; we find out what has and hasn’t worked before; we come up with innovative ideas for solving policy problems and we test and measure everything we do as robustly as we can. Our focus on testing, with a body of over 700 RCTs, has put us at the forefront of a revolution in evidence-based policy.

As an indication of the sort of work you could be involved in - here are some examples of projects that we work on:

  • Combating illegal wildlife trafficking;

  • Improving community based hygiene;

  • Encouraging healthy behaviours in online communities;

  • Increasing voluntary tax compliance.

All our staff believe passionately in our company values: always prioritising social impact, empiricism and humility, fresh thinking and collaboration, and lasting partnerships.

About you

We’re searching for a dynamic all-rounder to support both our project and business development work in Indonesia. This role is suited for a high-performing go-getter with a bachelor degree or higher, who is at the early to mid point of their career in public policy, research and behaviour change and has 2-3 years of experience either working or through a PhD or similar.

Our team comes from a variety of academic backgrounds, including economics, psychology, research methodology, neuroscience, anthropology, design, public policy and more. We also welcome candidates who may be taking non-traditional routes to behavioural science, such as those who have backgrounds in computer science, engineering, or the humanities. In general, we encourage candidates who have an interest in and understanding of what drives human behaviour to apply.

What does an Advisor at BIT do?

  • Design and deliver projects across a broad range of policy areas;

  • Design and implement randomised controlled trials;

  • Conduct technical research tasks, including power calculations, coding; randomisation and trial analyses;

  • Oversee small projects/ contracts including managing timelines, deliverables, and client expectations;

  • Prepare a range of materials, including trial checklists, ideas notes, literature reviews, journey and process maps, presentations and workshop materials;

Skills that make a great Advisor at BIT?

We are looking for people who understand what we do, share our values, and are keen to learn and develop their expertise. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate some of the skills listed below. It is ok to apply if you don’t yet offer all of these skills, as during your time in this role, we’ll help you to build the full range of skills you’ll need to apply behavioural science to create social impact..

  • Clear and convincing communications. You can explain complex topics in simple terms. You can lead a workshop or presentation and write clearly and concisely.

  • Managing projects and clients. You can manage your own time and, where appropriate, that of your colleagues to produce high-quality work within a reasonable time frame.

  • Behavioural science. You can explain the implications of theoretical concepts such as defaults, loss aversion and social norms.

  • Public policy design. You can see both sides of an argument, e.g. on topical issues related to education, home affairs, or international development, and you think about what makes some policies effective and others impractical.

  • Qualitative research design. You understand that people may experience a problem differently depending on their context. You can identify the types of people to talk to to understand the range of experiences more deeply. You will understand the needs of different types of people, including the most vulnerable, and will adapt your approach accordingly. You know how to spot patterns, as well as highlight where there is a range of experiences.

  • A solid understanding of ‘causality’ and statistical reasoning. You know that just because sales of sunglasses and ice creams increase at the same time, one does not cause the other. You can also describe how to run a test to prove this.

  • Managing and developing yourself at work. You demonstrate high self-awareness and regularly self-reflect. You are aware of the impact that your actions and words have on those around you. You are resilient and accept responsibility for decisions whether they achieve the desired outcome or not.

BIT really is a great place to work:

  • You’ll be part of an innovative and agile team working at the forefront of cutting edge, evidence-driven applied behavioural science. You will be a part of projects that deliver social impact by helping citizens, and policymakers, think differently.

  • While we work in a fast-paced field, we provide a supportive environment where you’ll learn and grow with on-the-job training from our experienced team of experts.

  • You will tap into a collegiate community of BI specialists across the world, from Paris to Mexico. At the same time, you will be joining the close-knit international team in Asia-Pacific where collaboration and solving problems together is key.

  • We encourage flexible working and have a culture which enables this. This includes flexible start and finish times, and an IT set up which allows for easy working-from-home options. We make an effort to adapt to our staff’s circumstances so that we can get the best out of everyone.

At the interview stage, you will be asked questions that reflect the role, so you have the chance to demonstrate your skills. It’s at this stage we first see your CV.
