Job Description

Position Title: Short-Term Sub Lower School Counselor

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Reports to: Head of School

Position Purpose: Provides support to students with learning differences or screens students who are at risk.

Primary Responsibilities

Resolve student issues by identifying behavioral, mental, emotional, physical, or social adjustments, and by providing guidance and assistance to resolve issues. Collaborate with director of lower school and director of learning services to support kindergarten through fourth-grade program, teachers, students, and parents. Support the ongoing development and implementation of social and emotional learning programming. This position is from August 9, 2023-September 30, 2023

Results and Expectations

  • Determine nature of student’s issue by conducting interviews, examining records, and obtaining information from teachers and administrators.

  • Identify specific issues by conducting and evaluating tests.

  • Guide student to a solution by identifying and exploring options, encouraging and recommending appropriate actions, preparing a plan of action, and leading crisis interventions.

  • Maintain progress towards student’s objectives by setting a schedule of follow-up meetings, coordinating a plan with teachers and administrators, reviewing student’s actions, discussing obstacles, making mid-course adjustments to plan of action, identifying and seeking additional resources, and investigating and recommending placement services.

  • Maintain records by documenting plans, progress, and outcomes.

  • Encourage participation in counseling by publicizing services and presenting informational lectures both inside the school and in the community.

  • Improve counseling services by evaluating processes and outcomes; conducting research; incorporating new procedures; recommending new policies and resources

  • Maintain professional competency by attending staff meetings and educational conferences, studying professional publications, and establishing personal networks.

  • Work with admissions office to support kindergarten screening process.

  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Master’s of social work or counseling or another related field

  • Minimum of four years in a K-5 school setting as a counselor

  • Proactive and eager to be a part of a collaborative team

  • Compassionate and empathetic disposition even when faced with difficulties
