Job Description

The British Academy – the UK’s national body for the humanities and social sciences - is seeking a Digital, Marketing and Brand Assistant to join the Communications and Marketing Directorate, providing key support in delivering a range of promotional activities on digital channels and print, to ensure an excellent website user experience and provide opportunities to showcase the Academy’s work in an engaging and accessible way.

ROLE PURPOSE / OVERVIEW

The Digital, Marketing and Brand Assistant works closely with other members of the Digital, Marketing and Brand team (currently six people) as well as other colleagues from all across the Academy. The Communications and Marketing Directorate is responsible for raising the profile of the Academy among a wide range of audiences. The Directorate is organised into four small teams but is a collaborative and integrated team working closely together on all aspects of our work. The four teams are; Digital, Brand and Marketing; Events; News and Stakeholder Engagement; and Publications.

Supported by team members, the role‐holder will assist with the day‐to‐day running of the Digital Team and will commission, create and promote content for all Academy channels including the website, social media and newsletters. You will support the ongoing development of the British Academy’s website, building new pages and reviewing and editing old ones. You will also contribute to the development and implementation of projects such as event marketing campaigns, promotional campaigns for large policy reports, brand projects and digital content production (eg video, audio and blog posts).

This role is a great opportunity for gaining experience in a wide range of areas within a supportive and creative team. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Website content creation

  • Support the publication of email marketing campaigns, working with teams from across the Academy to build, deliver and report on regular email newsletters.

  • Build pages for the British Academy website including funding opportunities, research programmes, prizes and medals and general information, with oversight from the Digital Producers.

  • Maintain standards of quality across the website, proactively identifying and resolving or escalating issues and suggesting improvements.

  • Support colleagues in using the website content management system, reviewing and approving updates made by colleagues across the Academy, dealing with problems in a timely manner and escalating to senior staff when appropriate. There is a development opportunity of delivering training workshops for colleagues.

  • Support the commissioning and editing of articles on a wide range of topics from British Academy Fellows, funded researchers and staff members.

Audio-visual content creation

  • Support the development of ideas for content, feeding into the planning process.

  • Support the production of British Academy podcasts by recording, transcribing and editing audio as needed.

  • Support the production of British Academy video content.

Marketing

  • Implement marketing campaigns to promote the Academy’s work through paid social posts, tailoring targeted promotion to different audience demographics, with oversight from Digital Producers and the Marketing & Brand Manager.

  • Create regular reports using tools such as Facebook Insights, AgoraPulse reports and Google Analytics and Google Data Studio.

Brand

  • Act as a brand ambassador, explaining the brand, visual identity and style guide to colleagues across the Academy.

  • Adhere to the British Academy style guide and maintain editorial standards across all digital content.

  • Research and source engaging and impactful images for Academy projects, ensuring images adhere to guidelines and copyright licenses

  • Basic understanding of the principles of online user experience.

  • Excellent attention to detail and editorial skills.

  • Interest in the subjects represented by the Academy.

  • Familiarity with Facebook advertising and / or Google Ads. 

  • Familiarity with audio and / or video editing software. 

  • Professional experience commissioning and editing content for online audiences.

  • Experience using content management systems (i.e. Drupal, Wagtail, WordPress etc.)

  • Experience working in the academic or cultural sector.
