About the role

As Head of Finance and Governance, you will lead accounting, financial management and governance of the charity.  You will be responsible for providing strategic financial leadership to the Chief Executive, the Board of Trustees and Sub-committees. 

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a qualified accountant with a calm and professional attitude and approach.

You will have a strong understanding of accounting policies and packages such as Xero.

Knowledge of The Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP), charity law and VAT will help you stand out from the crowd.

You will have an excellent eye for detail and the ability to think critically and make clear decisions under pressure.

You will have excellent people skills and work well on your own and as part of a team.

Key knowledge and skills

  • Strong understanding of accounting policies, preferably in a charity setting

  • Experience of administrating and managing outsourced payroll.

  • Sound understanding of data management

  • Good working knowledge of Xero accounting package or similar

  • Good IT skills including advanced excel skills.

  • Good communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain good working relationships

  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritise

  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills

  • Good management and administration skills

  • Knowledge of data protection policy and legislation and its practical application.

Role Dimensions

  • Manage Energise Me’s financial and accounting functions, related policies and reporting, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, regulations and procedures.

  • Guide the preparation of annual budgets and the creation of a three-year financial strategy.

  • Manage the payroll and personnel requirements of the charity.

  • Line manage the Finance and IT Manager.

  • Manage the external contractor who provides secretarial support to the charity.

Key Tasks

  • Manage key relationships with colleagues, Board of Trustees, the bank, external stakeholders and other regulatory bodies.

  • Plan and coordinate annual audit and prepare Energise Me’s annual Accounts.

  • Manage the Charity’s externally invested portfolio.

  • Manage HR and personnel requirements including Employee records, Pay details, Holiday entitlement records.

  • Manage the financial aspects of contracts and other arrangements with service contractors, funders and partners ensuring accurate and timely reporting.

  • Produce regular management and financial reports as required for the Chief Executive and Board of Trustees.

  • Exercise strong financial and budget monitoring including preparing monthly management accounts including cash flow forecast and balance sheet.

  • Ensure the effective implementation of financial controls within Energise Me and maintain financial procedures which underpin the effective operation of the charity.

  • Complete VAT returns (if appropriate) and ensure compliance with HMRC payroll submission requirements.

  • Ensure income is received in full- and on-time including claiming funds from grant-making bodies by overseeing all financial transactions, invoicing and credit control.

  • Authorise purchase orders, invoices and payments to suppliers.

  • Authorise Payroll payments and all other external payments.

  • Manage and oversee the Finance & Administration Officer.
